About this book
"By putting the empowerment of people at the center of strategy creation, PREDICTABLE MAGIC is as much a book about values and leadership as it is about design. It can help executives find meaning and value in their work as they create meaning and value for their consumers."---Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, world-renowned executive coach; author, THE NEW YORK TIMES bestsellers, MOJO, and WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON'T GET YOU THERE"While every company strives to create products and services that dazzle, few achieve this feat. Prahalad and Sawhney lay out a simple but powerful methodology for turning deep consumer insights into attention-grabbing, expectation-defying designs. If you're looking to increase the `magic quotient' in the things your company makes and sells, you'll want to dig into PREDICTABLE MAGIC."---Dr. Gary Hamel, Visiting Professor, London Business School; author, THE FUTURE OF MANAGEMENT and LEADING THE REVOLUTION"The natural fusion of psychology and creative disciplines enable a potent capability that will be critically important as we seek to better understand the demands of a diverse global population. PREDICTABLE MAGIC outlines an important framework to capture and define the emotional wants and needs of a user."---Ken Musgrave, IDSA, Director, Experience Design, Dell"Prahalad and Sawhney shine a light on an important piece of the strategic puzzle: how to convert consumer emotions into successful designs. They provide a rigorous approach to guide innovation efforts from strategy creation through execution. This is a must-read for anyone who is trying to create a new product or develop a new business model."---Dr. Vijay Govindarajan, Professor, Tuck School of Business; Chief Innovation Consultant, GE; author, TEN RULES FOR STRATEGIC INNOVATORS"Prahalad and Sawhney have written an unusually useful book. It is one of the rare sources that go beyond giving us another definition of innovation. With concrete examples linked to practical principles, they show us how to do it."---Patrick Whitney, Steelcase / Robert C. Pew Professor and Dean, Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of TechnologyCompanies invest fortunes on innovation and product strategy. But by some estimates, 80% of new products fail or underperform. Every year, though, a few rare products succeed brilliantly. Why? Their creators have seamlessly integrated corporate strategy with design. They don't deliver utilitarian objects: They craft rewarding, empowering experiences. To outsiders, this looks like magic: incomprehensible and impossible to reproduce. But it isn't. PREDICTABLE MAGIC presents a complete design process for making the "magic" happen---over and over again.Award-winning industrial designer Ravi Sawhney and business strategist Deepa Prahalad introduce Psycho-Aesthetics, a breakthrough approach for systematically creating deep emotional connections between consumers and brands.Step by step, you'll learn everything you need to know to make Psycho-Aesthetics work, from research to strategy, implementation to consumer experience. You'll also see it at work in case studies from some of the world's top companies, including Medtronic and Amana, as well as innovative start-ups.

If I'm going to spend more than a hundred bucks on an item or somewhere around there, I do extensive research first to know I got the best bang-for-the-buck and, consequently, dodge any potential future buyer's remorse.I've realized that the time I spend doing my product comparisons is often time that others don't have so I may as well share what I can.I'll start by saying that you'll see my "Verified Amazon Purchase" on the Flip HD Ultra Camcorder review because, obviously, that's the one I wound up buying and I'll share with you why. Flip Ultra HD vs. Flip MinoHD

I previously owned the Flip MinoHD so this review is based on a comparison between the Flip MinoHD and the new Flip UltraHD.After reading about the Flip UltraHD's addition of an HDMI output, larger screen, and longer battery life I decided to sell my 4 month old Flip MinoHD and purchase the Flip UltraHD. Since the MinoHD is very sleek and diminutive in size, my first reaction to the UltraHD was that it was quite a bit larger and bulkier to hold, and has taken some time to get used to. However, unless you've used a MinoHD the larger size of the UlraHD will probably be less noticeable. I found the camera controls on the UltraHD to be slightly easier to operate vs. the touch sensitive buttons on the MinoHD. As far as video quality between the two, I compared two different videos and both are about the same, however, the colors appear to be slightly more vibrant with the UltraHD.If you are trying to decide which one to purchase, if maximum portability is... 3/5 Jeff "Jeff" (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Ultra Flip Review and walkthrough

I'm a computer artist and animator and I haven't been happy with a lot of cameras. I was drawn to the Ultra Flip because of the lack of wires, I like the idea of the USB stick. They include a set of batteries with the package so you can start recording right away (as well as a little velvet drawstring bag). It was very easy to use, it's just as promised, click the red button to record (and to stop) then flip (ha-ha) the USB stick out and put it in your computer's USB slot.I read a reviewer of another model of the Flip saying he needed an extra part to hook up his USB, I don't know what he was using but you don't need any middleman if you have a current USB port. Of course it might have been that he didn't feel comfortable with the camera sort of weighing itself down a bit when you have the USB attached to a tower. I'm using mine with a laptop which is on a table so the camera can rest comfortably on it. He might have gotten a USB extension so that he could set his down if... 5/5 Gina Miller (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews, September 16, 2007

Terrific substitute for a larger camcorder for casual use

I'd love to do a video review of the Flip Video Ultra, but there's so much detail to be covered, I think the video format might get boring. First, the Flip Video Ultra is in a class all its own. It is purely a highly portable video recorder for casual use. It will not replace your $12,000 Sony prosumer model or even your $800 Sony, Canon or Pansonic. Rather the Flip Video Ultra is an extremely portable unit, measuring about 2.25 inches across by 4 inches high and a bit more than an inch thick. Powered by two AA cells, it can record 60 minutes or - surprise - more of video. In my experiments, I recorded almost 2 hours of video on a Flip Video Ultra. There's no big secret here: if what you are recording has relatively little movement, you can stretch your recording time. Thus, for recording lectures of your version of "My Dinner With Andre", the Flip might work out better than you planned. The 640 x 480 VGA video is surprisingly good. Not... 5/5 Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA) - See all my reviews, September 30, 2007

Small Device With Big Memory! (UPDATE!)

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:34 MinsUPDATE: The new model of FLIP Video is better designed and does not have a problem with the record button being insensitive as shown in this video. Also, the HD version is already a classic!A video camera the size of a box of cigarettes records up to 1 hour of your favorite 'instant' moments with an easy on/off button, minor zoom and shuttling between videos. Simply plug it into your PC, download the SETUP and you are on your way to editing your own home movies. This is a cool invention! And YES, the Record button does take a firm click - its not sensitive as you'll see (Press, press, press....)Since you don't want to risk snapping the FLIP Camera USB port off on your computer, I recommend you buy the CABLES TO GO 26686 (male and female ends). It is six feet long and very convenient. Also, I highly recommend buying a waterproof encasement for rainy or even very humid days. I fried my FLIP recently without any water (just... 5/5 Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco/Oakland, CA.) - See all my reviews, October 7, 2007

    Phenomenal easy-to-use pocket camcorder

Any less-than-5-star reviews of this camcorder that were written during Summer 2006 simply miss the point of the device. The Pure Digital Point and Shoot camcorder is one of the most easy-to-use electronic devices I have ever used. With only 6 buttons (on/off, play, delete, zoom in/out, backward/forward, and stop/pause) one is able to digitally record and save events with the greatest of ease. Very little instructional material is packaged with this device because it is simply not needed. Coming complete with batteries, I was able to start recording immediately out-of-the-box. For the price and convenience - currently only $130 and virtually no setup time for recording spontaneous events - the Point and Shoot camcorder simply cannot be beat. There are two drawbacks to this device: memory and image quality. With only 512MB of unexpandable memory, the device only stores 30 minutes of footage. However, downloading footage to your PC or laptop is incredibly easy as the device has a... 5/5 Erik Gfesser (Lombard, IL United States) - See all my reviews, July 8, 2006

    Easy and Simple; No Support

If you need something simple to record life's daily events, this is what you have been looking for. Very easy to use, bright colors, outstanding audio. You can take the camera into an "authorized reseller" and have your full memory transferred to a DVD (for a price, of course) or you can save your videos directly to your computer. There is 512 megabytes of built in memory, so you can do the math as to how many 30 minute videos you can save. Of course, you can also burn your own DVD's then remove the saved videos from your computer.I had some big problems trying to dump the video off the camera onto my HP laptop. The built in software created error messages, and couldn't load onto the computer. The camera would turn off in the middle of transferring the video (after I FINALLY got the software loaded). I never did get the laptop to accept the camera. I emailed the company and, as of this writing four days later, never got a response. This review is from: Bell+Howell T100HD-BL Take1 HD Digital Video Camcorder with Fold Out LCD Screen Video Camera with 1.8-Inch LCD (Blue) (Electronics) Very disappointed in this camera. I bought it for my grandson for his birthday and he was clearly not impressed. The video and camera are grainy and have hardly discernible images when filming and playing back. I bought a 16 GB flash memory card to go with this so he could have longer videos and store more pictures, so I feel like I wasted my money on that too. The pictured advertising for this product is extremely misleading, I fell for it. Should have opened it up and tried it out myself before giving it as a gift. I did not want to take his gift to return it. I will never purchase another Bell+Howell product again. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 13, 2014

Even 720p should look better than what this camera produces. The batteries last about 10 minutes of recording time. The audio from the built in microphone does pick up but is about a second delayed with the picture on the videos I shot. Makes it look like a dubbed over foreign film. The tripod mount is poorly sized plastic treads and does not fit leaving the camera just wobbling around and actually falling off the tripod when swiveling. The only good footage I have taken is outdoors in bright sunlight but the sound is still off. It will not pick up any video indoors under fluorescent lighting even if your house if very well lit. I even tried supplemental lamps for extra light and it looked like the blair witch project. Still pictures are very poor. My flip phone form 5 years ago took better pictures. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 2, 2015

Great for point-and-shoot, but the editing on a Mac stinks

In order to promote their new video reviews (which I think are a great idea), Amazon sent me (for free! I love Amazon) a brand spankin' new Flip video camcorder. It came today and my daughter and I had some fun with it on the way home. I haven't gotten a lot of use out of the thing yet, but I have some initial thoughts:1. It couldn't be easier to take videos. You insert the batteries and press a button and you're filming.2. You connect it to the computer by plugging it into the USB port. Software downloads to your computer, all very smoothly. The connection to the USB port is problematic. A USB connector pops out of the side of the camera, which is very elegant but doesn't work well in practice. I had to unplug another device to fit it into the available slot next door. It's kind of like having one of those big plugs taking up so much room on a power strip. I've already ordered an extension for it.3. The editing software is very basic. This is to be... 3/5 Debra Hamel (North Haven, CT) - See all my reviews, September 29, 2007

3/5 Jeff "Jeff" (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Good portable camera, the younger brother to the HD Model

I have two Flip camcorders - the MinoHD, and the Flip Ultra (this product).I consider this one to be the younger brother to the MinoHD, with lower video quality, but also some things I like better than the HD model. Therefore I'm giving this 3.5 stars, and here is why. Here's what I like BETTER:1. the larger viewing screen on the camera - as compared to the HD version, this one has a much better viewing screen and a much better field of vision. the HD version has to be some distance away from what you're filming in order to get a good view, but with the ultra you can be much closer to your subject and still see all around them2. more space - 120 minutes means I can carry this thing with me all day and take create 640x480 video, up to 2 hours worth, and that's important if you're out and about (although I wish there was a way to put a memory card into it for more space)3. The product has a better surface for holding and gripping the camera. The... 3/5 Heath Buckmaster "_heath_" (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews, June 9, 2009
