About this book
"By putting the empowerment of people at the center of strategy creation, PREDICTABLE MAGIC is as much a book about values and leadership as it is about design. It can help executives find meaning and value in their work as they create meaning and value for their consumers."---Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, world-renowned executive coach; author, THE NEW YORK TIMES bestsellers, MOJO, and WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON'T GET YOU THERE"While every company strives to create products and services that dazzle, few achieve this feat. Prahalad and Sawhney lay out a simple but powerful methodology for turning deep consumer insights into attention-grabbing, expectation-defying designs. If you're looking to increase the `magic quotient' in the things your company makes and sells, you'll want to dig into PREDICTABLE MAGIC."---Dr. Gary Hamel, Visiting Professor, London Business School; author, THE FUTURE OF MANAGEMENT and LEADING THE REVOLUTION"The natural fusion of psychology and creative disciplines enable a potent capability that will be critically important as we seek to better understand the demands of a diverse global population. PREDICTABLE MAGIC outlines an important framework to capture and define the emotional wants and needs of a user."---Ken Musgrave, IDSA, Director, Experience Design, Dell"Prahalad and Sawhney shine a light on an important piece of the strategic puzzle: how to convert consumer emotions into successful designs. They provide a rigorous approach to guide innovation efforts from strategy creation through execution. This is a must-read for anyone who is trying to create a new product or develop a new business model."---Dr. Vijay Govindarajan, Professor, Tuck School of Business; Chief Innovation Consultant, GE; author, TEN RULES FOR STRATEGIC INNOVATORS"Prahalad and Sawhney have written an unusually useful book. It is one of the rare sources that go beyond giving us another definition of innovation. With concrete examples linked to practical principles, they show us how to do it."---Patrick Whitney, Steelcase / Robert C. Pew Professor and Dean, Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of TechnologyCompanies invest fortunes on innovation and product strategy. But by some estimates, 80% of new products fail or underperform. Every year, though, a few rare products succeed brilliantly. Why? Their creators have seamlessly integrated corporate strategy with design. They don't deliver utilitarian objects: They craft rewarding, empowering experiences. To outsiders, this looks like magic: incomprehensible and impossible to reproduce. But it isn't. PREDICTABLE MAGIC presents a complete design process for making the "magic" happen---over and over again.Award-winning industrial designer Ravi Sawhney and business strategist Deepa Prahalad introduce Psycho-Aesthetics, a breakthrough approach for systematically creating deep emotional connections between consumers and brands.Step by step, you'll learn everything you need to know to make Psycho-Aesthetics work, from research to strategy, implementation to consumer experience. You'll also see it at work in case studies from some of the world's top companies, including Medtronic and Amana, as well as innovative start-ups.

The Best Flip once again so far....

This review is very similar to the review that I gave for the Flip Slid HD when it first came out. (Please see that review also...)I have been a Flip camera user since they released the first gen. Flip Mino HD (not the new metallic model). I loved the camera. For what I needed it for it was everything I wanted. I soon became addicted to the Flip cameras and needed to purchase the newest one every time they came out.I currently own the Flip Mino HD (1st gen) Flip Ultra HD (2nd Gen) Flip Slide HD, and now the Flip Ultra HD (3rd Gen with Flip Port). I also own a Canon GL2 and Vixia 30 video cameras and a Canon Xi digital SLR.I got home from school on Tuesday and found my brand new Flip Ultra HD waiting for me. I had about 20 minutes to open the package, look and set up the features (time, date, etc.) before I had to leave for marching band rehearsal. During rehearsal I did some test shooting and I was very impressed with the quality of this camera,... 5/5 N. Great Basic Camera, somewhat lacking features for power users

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:43 MinsThis is a powerful, easy-to-use, fairly cheap video camera; it records @ 1280 x 720, 60 FPS, and can hold about two full hours of video at that capacity. It fits neatly in a shirt pocket and is pretty much ideal for recording anything that doesn't need to be professionally produced film, from home movies to recording interviews. It comes packaged with a basic editing program that's designed to make it as easy as possible to produce basic home movies and post them to the web.So far as that goes, it's a great camera, especially at the price. The only real problem with it is that the overall interface is fairly dumbed down -- for the sake of ease of use, they've traded away a *lot* of functionality. For example, it's easy to view the clips you've just recorded in the viewfinder, but you can't "fast forward" or "rewind" to a specific frame when you're not actively playing back videos, because there's only one set of "forward" and "reverse" buttons,... 5/5 T. Hard to recommend with so many gadgets w/video in market now

I wavered between giving this three or four stars, but settled on four because it delivers what it promises in spades: EASY to use, high quality video recording in a small package. If I could, I would give a 3.5. There's a BIG "but" though:The caveat here is that this is now a single-purpose, niche product, whose single purpose can be found on a number of different devices, from DSLR's, to point and shoot cameras, to smartphones (and probably non smart phones). You would be hard pressed to find even the lowliest point and shoot digital camera that doesn't record 720p video these days. The one differentiator here is that this Flip shoots video at 60 frames per second, which is great if you are mostly going to be shooting outdoors, in bright light (because you SHOULD get smoother looking action, although most people can't see the difference). But it can actually be a disadvantage (vs the more standard 24 or 30fps) when shooting in lower light situations. I... 4/5 B. Edwards - See all my reviews, October 27, 2010

This review is from: Bell and Howell T100HD-BKTake1 HD Digital Video Camcorder with Flip out LCD Screen, Flip USB and 1.8-Inch LCD (Black) (Electronics) I purchased this to go Bow hunting and attached to either my tree stand or my bow and when I go scouting.when I got it I gave it a test run and the picture quality was very grainy. its usable but no where near HD quality if you expect to take basic memory vids then this is fine. if you are looking to take picks that you might want to get a bit extra detail on a few things then skip it.I don't have the cash to splurge so I just got some extra batteries and used my Finepix camera which I got refurbished for $50 or $60 bucks and takes GREAT HD pics, just eats rechargeable like no tmw.also, if you do buy this be aware that it feels like if you drop it, it will break. also has a button on the side that when pressed makes you feel like you will break it.buyer beware 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 18, 2013

    Not HD

0 1/5 JamesPC - See all my reviews This review is from: Bell and Howell T100HD-BKTake1 HD Digital Video Camcorder with Flip out LCD Screen, Flip USB and 1.8-Inch LCD (Black) (Electronics) This camcorder comes with batteries that don't work, and the videos it shoots are low-quality, very grainy and nowhere near HD--this is very clearly a case of false advertizing. There are no options to change the video or improve the quality, pretty much all you can do is point, shoot and hope it doesn't shut down while you're filming. It's not worth $10, much less the $49.99 they're asking for. I received this for Christmas this year and wish that the friend who gave it to me would've just given me a gift card instead. Hands-down one of the worst cameras ever. This is what you give to your accident-prone 4-year old when they want to play "movie star". 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , December 29, 2012

0 1/5 Jared - See all my reviews This review is from: Bell and Howell T100HD-BKTake1 HD Digital Video Camcorder with Flip out LCD Screen, Flip USB and 1.8-Inch LCD (Black) (Electronics) I received this camera for free for my 5 year anniversary gift through my company. It says it is HD but it gives absolutely horrible picture quality. Wish I chose an alarm clock for my gift over this piece of junk. My cell phone and my wife's cell phones take much better pictures and video than this camera/video recorder. Hard to believe they write HD on it and pretend it takes HD pictures. Extremely grainy would be an accurate description. So grainy that it's worthless. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 27, 2013

    Ultra Flip Review and walkthrough

I'm a computer artist and animator and I haven't been happy with a lot of cameras. I was drawn to the Ultra Flip because of the lack of wires, I like the idea of the USB stick. They include a set of batteries with the package so you can start recording right away (as well as a little velvet drawstring bag). It was very easy to use, it's just as promised, click the red button to record (and to stop) then flip (ha-ha) the USB stick out and put it in your computer's USB slot.I read a reviewer of another model of the Flip saying he needed an extra part to hook up his USB, I don't know what he was using but you don't need any middleman if you have a current USB port. Of course it might have been that he didn't feel comfortable with the camera sort of weighing itself down a bit when you have the USB attached to a tower. I'm using mine with a laptop which is on a table so the camera can rest comfortably on it. He might have gotten a USB extension so that he could set his down if... 5/5 Gina Miller (Seattle, WA USA) - See all my reviews, September 16, 2007

Terrific substitute for a larger camcorder for casual use

I'd love to do a video review of the Flip Video Ultra, but there's so much detail to be covered, I think the video format might get boring. First, the Flip Video Ultra is in a class all its own. It is purely a highly portable video recorder for casual use. It will not replace your $12,000 Sony prosumer model or even your $800 Sony, Canon or Pansonic. Rather the Flip Video Ultra is an extremely portable unit, measuring about 2.25 inches across by 4 inches high and a bit more than an inch thick. Powered by two AA cells, it can record 60 minutes or - surprise - more of video. In my experiments, I recorded almost 2 hours of video on a Flip Video Ultra. There's no big secret here: if what you are recording has relatively little movement, you can stretch your recording time. Thus, for recording lectures of your version of "My Dinner With Andre", the Flip might work out better than you planned. The 640 x 480 VGA video is surprisingly good. Not... 5/5 Jerry Saperstein (Evanston, IL USA) - See all my reviews, September 30, 2007

Small Device With Big Memory! (UPDATE!)

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:34 MinsUPDATE: The new model of FLIP Video is better designed and does not have a problem with the record button being insensitive as shown in this video. Also, the HD version is already a classic!A video camera the size of a box of cigarettes records up to 1 hour of your favorite 'instant' moments with an easy on/off button, minor zoom and shuttling between videos. Simply plug it into your PC, download the SETUP and you are on your way to editing your own home movies. This is a cool invention! And YES, the Record button does take a firm click - its not sensitive as you'll see (Press, press, press....)Since you don't want to risk snapping the FLIP Camera USB port off on your computer, I recommend you buy the CABLES TO GO 26686 (male and female ends). It is six feet long and very convenient. Also, I highly recommend buying a waterproof encasement for rainy or even very humid days. The camcorder SHOWDOWN: I've done the product comparisons for you

If I'm going to spend more than a hundred bucks on an item or somewhere around there, I do extensive research first to know I got the best bang-for-the-buck and, consequently, dodge any potential future buyer's remorse.I've realized that the time I spend doing my product comparisons is often time that others don't have so I may as well share what I can.I'll start by saying that you'll see my "Verified Amazon Purchase" on the Flip HD Ultra Camcorder review because, obviously, that's the one I wound up buying and I'll share with you why. Flip Ultra HD vs. Flip MinoHD

I previously owned the Flip MinoHD so this review is based on a comparison between the Flip MinoHD and the new Flip UltraHD.After reading about the Flip UltraHD's addition of an HDMI output, larger screen, and longer battery life I decided to sell my 4 month old Flip MinoHD and purchase the Flip UltraHD. Since the MinoHD is very sleek and diminutive in size, my first reaction to the UltraHD was that it was quite a bit larger and bulkier to hold, and has taken some time to get used to. However, unless you've used a MinoHD the larger size of the UlraHD will probably be less noticeable. I found the camera controls on the UltraHD to be slightly easier to operate vs. the touch sensitive buttons on the MinoHD. As far as video quality between the two, I compared two different videos and both are about the same, however, the colors appear to be slightly more vibrant with the UltraHD.If you are trying to decide which one to purchase, if maximum portability is... 3/5 Jeff "Jeff" (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) It's ok.

I currently own a Flip Mino HD and was looking for something with a bit more features. I bought this because of its expandable memory and removable battery. I didn't want to be limited to the Flip's 60 min shooting time and 2 hour battery life. The unique swivel lens is pretty awesome! It made turning the camera on and off really easy and shooting video at all angles also easy -- especially if you're taking self videos, just turn the lens on yourself! Taking 5MP photos is a plus. You don't have to bring an extra digital camera! With that said, I ultimately returned the camera. The features over the Flip are really great, but I was pretty disappointed in the video quality compared to the Flip. Low light video is not great -- indoor and night shooting was pretty dark. I know there's a video setting for low light, but that didn't really help the quality much. It picks up audio really well but if you swivel the lens you can hear it, and it also picks up wind easily. Cany-bar format Sony Webbie HD

This camera is basically the original Sony Webbie HD (MHS-CM1) camera shaped into a candy-bar format to more directly compete with the Flip Mino HD. In doing so you lose the optical zoom and the LED light. If you discount comments about the optical zoom (including complaints about motor noise) and the usefulness of the LED light, the rest of the features are pretty much the same and you can use the reviews for the original Webbie HD. I knew going in that this would be mainly an outdoor-only camera, but thats exactly what I wanted a smaller second camera for. I have a Canon HV20 HDV camera for indoor and more demanding use, but wanted something similar to a Flip to keep in my pocket when doing activities outside (walking the dogs, going to a bar-b-que, etc. where I am not consciously thinking of taping the event but something comes up that is worth capturing) that has a removable battery and flash memory. Rotating Lense Makes It Ideal For Hobbyists

This is the only mini HD video camera on the market at present with a rotating head and that's the reason I use it. If you don't need the rotating head, there are better mini cams on the market and I recommend you seek them out.I knocked off a star because during continuous recording, you have to re-press the record button every 25 minutes - that's the max clip length. Non of the other so called drawbacks concerned me: no on-board battery charging, slightly soft 1080i, the fact that you need to buy a memory card, lousy low light recording, etc etc etc. It is what it is folks - a fairly inexpensive high definition recorder. For all you hobbyists out there, I've been using this for about a month now and I've got to say, for the price it's a keeper. I've attached it to an rc helicopter and sent it up a couple of hundred feet, strapped it to the handlebars of a bike and velrco'd it to the bill of my baseball hat.
