About this book
"By putting the empowerment of people at the center of strategy creation, PREDICTABLE MAGIC is as much a book about values and leadership as it is about design. It can help executives find meaning and value in their work as they create meaning and value for their consumers."---Dr. Marshall Goldsmith, world-renowned executive coach; author, THE NEW YORK TIMES bestsellers, MOJO, and WHAT GOT YOU HERE WON'T GET YOU THERE"While every company strives to create products and services that dazzle, few achieve this feat. Prahalad and Sawhney lay out a simple but powerful methodology for turning deep consumer insights into attention-grabbing, expectation-defying designs. If you're looking to increase the `magic quotient' in the things your company makes and sells, you'll want to dig into PREDICTABLE MAGIC."---Dr. Gary Hamel, Visiting Professor, London Business School; author, THE FUTURE OF MANAGEMENT and LEADING THE REVOLUTION"The natural fusion of psychology and creative disciplines enable a potent capability that will be critically important as we seek to better understand the demands of a diverse global population. PREDICTABLE MAGIC outlines an important framework to capture and define the emotional wants and needs of a user."---Ken Musgrave, IDSA, Director, Experience Design, Dell"Prahalad and Sawhney shine a light on an important piece of the strategic puzzle: how to convert consumer emotions into successful designs. They provide a rigorous approach to guide innovation efforts from strategy creation through execution. This is a must-read for anyone who is trying to create a new product or develop a new business model."---Dr. Vijay Govindarajan, Professor, Tuck School of Business; Chief Innovation Consultant, GE; author, TEN RULES FOR STRATEGIC INNOVATORS"Prahalad and Sawhney have written an unusually useful book. It is one of the rare sources that go beyond giving us another definition of innovation. With concrete examples linked to practical principles, they show us how to do it."---Patrick Whitney, Steelcase / Robert C. Pew Professor and Dean, Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of TechnologyCompanies invest fortunes on innovation and product strategy. But by some estimates, 80% of new products fail or underperform. Every year, though, a few rare products succeed brilliantly. Why? Their creators have seamlessly integrated corporate strategy with design. They don't deliver utilitarian objects: They craft rewarding, empowering experiences. To outsiders, this looks like magic: incomprehensible and impossible to reproduce. But it isn't. PREDICTABLE MAGIC presents a complete design process for making the "magic" happen---over and over again.Award-winning industrial designer Ravi Sawhney and business strategist Deepa Prahalad introduce Psycho-Aesthetics, a breakthrough approach for systematically creating deep emotional connections between consumers and brands.Step by step, you'll learn everything you need to know to make Psycho-Aesthetics work, from research to strategy, implementation to consumer experience. You'll also see it at work in case studies from some of the world's top companies, including Medtronic and Amana, as well as innovative start-ups.

The Best Flip once again so far....

This review is very similar to the review that I gave for the Flip Slid HD when it first came out. (Please see that review also...)I have been a Flip camera user since they released the first gen. Flip Mino HD (not the new metallic model). I loved the camera. For what I needed it for it was everything I wanted. I soon became addicted to the Flip cameras and needed to purchase the newest one every time they came out.I currently own the Flip Mino HD (1st gen) Flip Ultra HD (2nd Gen) Flip Slide HD, and now the Flip Ultra HD (3rd Gen with Flip Port). I also own a Canon GL2 and Vixia 30 video cameras and a Canon Xi digital SLR.I got home from school on Tuesday and found my brand new Flip Ultra HD waiting for me. I had about 20 minutes to open the package, look and set up the features (time, date, etc.) before I had to leave for marching band rehearsal. During rehearsal I did some test shooting and I was very impressed with the quality of this camera,... 5/5 N. Great Basic Camera, somewhat lacking features for power users

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:42 MinsThis is a powerful, easy-to-use, fairly cheap video camera; it records @ 1280 x 720, 60 FPS, and can hold about two full hours of video at that capacity. It fits neatly in a shirt pocket and is pretty much ideal for recording anything that doesn't need to be professionally produced film, from home movies to recording interviews. It comes packaged with a basic editing program that's designed to make it as easy as possible to produce basic home movies and post them to the web.So far as that goes, it's a great camera, especially at the price. The only real problem with it is that the overall interface is fairly dumbed down -- for the sake of ease of use, they've traded away a *lot* of functionality. For example, it's easy to view the clips you've just recorded in the viewfinder, but you can't "fast forward" or "rewind" to a specific frame when you're not actively playing back videos, because there's only one set of "forward" and "reverse" buttons,... 5/5 T. Hard to recommend with so many gadgets w/video in market now

I wavered between giving this three or four stars, but settled on four because it delivers what it promises in spades: EASY to use, high quality video recording in a small package. If I could, I would give a 3.5. There's a BIG "but" though:The caveat here is that this is now a single-purpose, niche product, whose single purpose can be found on a number of different devices, from DSLR's, to point and shoot cameras, to smartphones (and probably non smart phones). You would be hard pressed to find even the lowliest point and shoot digital camera that doesn't record 720p video these days. The one differentiator here is that this Flip shoots video at 60 frames per second, which is great if you are mostly going to be shooting outdoors, in bright light (because you SHOULD get smoother looking action, although most people can't see the difference). But it can actually be a disadvantage (vs the more standard 24 or 30fps) when shooting in lower light situations. I... 4/5 B. Edwards - See all my reviews, October 27, 2010

WARNING - NOT TRULY 3RD GENERATION

Please see Cisco's response, below. I am glad Cisco has responded.________________________________I almost bought one of these until I read the fine print. The "real" Flip UltraHAD 3rd Generation has 60 fps recording speed for better action shots AND electronic stabilization - two BIG features.I can give up the 4 gb of extra storage on the "regular" model, but his "Black Friday" model blowing out at Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon strikes me as a "come on" - it omits the two essential features that make the 3rd Generation Flips of interest - the higher frame rate (60 fps vs 30 fps on this one) and the stabilization. Read the specs and blurbs on the REAL model you need to be looking at: 2/5 MWebb (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews, November 26, 2010

    Handy camera

I couldn't ask for an easier lighter more user friendly camcorder than this! This camera is so easy to use it's amazing. Just point and shoot. Then preview your videos or upload to your computer. The Flip software for your computer helps you customize and make adorable movies to be burned to a cd and saved forever! This camer is so easy, I convinced my principal to purchase three for our school. Now kids make video projects! I even video taped our SGA speeches and created a movie with music and credits. Sure, there are plenty out there that can do all this, but for the price and the ease, the Flip is the bomb! 5/5 Matt from Linksys/Cisco, November 23, 2010

    Very deceptive by Flip

I double checked the specs on the Flip website - although the 1 hour and 2 hour Flips have identical names, they are NOT the same quality camera. The 2 hours has image stabilization and 60 fps (frames per second), while the 1 hour camera does not have stabilization and only shoots 30 fps.I can't stand it when companies pull stuff like this. 1/5 Reader for Life! Excellent, Compact Camcorder

Customer Video Review Length:: 3:05 MinsI've made a video review, using the Flip Ultra Camcorder, so that you can see the audio/video quality (Keep in mind I had to compress the video a little bit for Amazon), and I also show how to use the camcorder. In my opinion, this is an excellent camcorder for a novice, or someone who just wants an easy to use camcorder that is small and compact. I personally don't need more than 2 hours recording time and it's wonderful not having to purchase tapes. The price is actually less than many digital cameras. Good portable camera, the younger brother to the HD Model

I have two Flip camcorders - the MinoHD, and the Flip Ultra (this product).I consider this one to be the younger brother to the MinoHD, with lower video quality, but also some things I like better than the HD model. Therefore I'm giving this 3.5 stars, and here is why. Here's what I like BETTER:1. the larger viewing screen on the camera - as compared to the HD version, this one has a much better viewing screen and a much better field of vision. the HD version has to be some distance away from what you're filming in order to get a good view, but with the ultra you can be much closer to your subject and still see all around them2. more space - 120 minutes means I can carry this thing with me all day and take create 640x480 video, up to 2 hours worth, and that's important if you're out and about (although I wish there was a way to put a memory card into it for more space)3. The product has a better surface for holding and gripping the camera. The... 3/5 Heath L. Buckmaster "_heath_" (Sacramento, CA USA) - See all my reviews, June 9, 2009

The camcorder SHOWDOWN: I've done the product comparisons for you

If I'm going to spend more than a hundred bucks on an item or somewhere around there, I do extensive research first to know I got the best bang-for-the-buck and, consequently, dodge any potential future buyer's remorse.I've realized that the time I spend doing my product comparisons is often time that others don't have so I may as well share what I can.I'll start by saying that you'll see my "Verified Amazon Purchase" on the Flip HD Ultra Camcorder review because, obviously, that's the one I wound up buying and I'll share with you why. Flip Ultra HD vs. Flip MinoHD

I previously owned the Flip MinoHD so this review is based on a comparison between the Flip MinoHD and the new Flip UltraHD.After reading about the Flip UltraHD's addition of an HDMI output, larger screen, and longer battery life I decided to sell my 4 month old Flip MinoHD and purchase the Flip UltraHD. Since the MinoHD is very sleek and diminutive in size, my first reaction to the UltraHD was that it was quite a bit larger and bulkier to hold, and has taken some time to get used to. However, unless you've used a MinoHD the larger size of the UlraHD will probably be less noticeable. I found the camera controls on the UltraHD to be slightly easier to operate vs. the touch sensitive buttons on the MinoHD. As far as video quality between the two, I compared two different videos and both are about the same, however, the colors appear to be slightly more vibrant with the UltraHD.If you are trying to decide which one to purchase, if maximum portability is... 3/5 Jeff "Jeff" (Minneapolis, MN) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Speedy and Compact High Quality Camcorder

I am highly impressed by this little camcorder. While the size of it is about the same size as a smart phone, this specializing in just recording movies makes this a must buy item. I have a android phone also, but I am happy to have this based on how fast I can record something. I can simply take this out, cut it on about 1-3 seconds and hit record. There is pretty much no load time whatsoever. While this isn't perfect, for the price it's worth every penny.Pros1. Speed - All it requires for you to do is cut it on and you will be recording immediately. If you see something, you will most likely have it on this device.2. Convenient - It's small and compact. You can easily fit this in your pocket. Also the software that comes with it makes it extremely easy to use which is stored on the camera itself. Plug it in your pc, use it like a flash drive and install it on your pc. Everything else is self explanatory.3. Technologically... 5/5 C. E. A Great Camera with a few flaws

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:44 MinsI have been a fan of Flip Cameras for nearly 4 years. I have taken them everywhere and enjoyed the ease of their use. On a recent vacation to Disney World we did the unthinkable - we left our Flip camera at home. While in Florida I went to the store and purchases the Sony Bloggie - and I really couldn't be happier. Some Notes-- The video quality is outstanding - I use the 720P @ 60 frames per second and I am stunned at how much better the Bloggie is compared to the Flip.- One great feature is that the Bloggie doubles as a standard camera. While taking videos simply press the button and still-shots are created and filed separately. Teh picture quality is again... very good.- Compared to the Flip, the Bloggie does pretty well in low light. One example is that 2 years ago when we went to the Magic Kingdom we were unable to record anything on the ride/attraction "It's a Small World" when using our Flip. On this trip... 4/5 CKE (USA) - See all my reviews, February 19, 2012

    Beautiful Garbage

OverallI thought when I opened the package, "Wow! This is gonna be great!" I bought it to take to the Rush Time Machine tour. What I didn't realize was that the battery time is less than two hours, and that the video time is pretty bad as well. In addition, if you want a nice wide screen look to your videos, the microphone is placed exactly where your finger will want to rest when you hold it.Video QualityThe video is shaky, lacking any stabilization control software, and anything that creates a decent amount of light or movement on the screen will cause it to fall out of focus. Getting it back into focus isn't easy, and the only way I found to get it jumpstarted is to take a picture with it, which is going to shake the camera as you move your finger and press the button. Even taking a picture, however, is no guarantee that the camera will make its way back into focus, and you could end up like me during the sing Witch Hunt, panning the camera... 1/5 Jimmy The Chu (The 9th Plane of Hell) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sony Bloggie Touch (MHS-TS10/S) - 4 GB, 2 Hour (Silver) (Electronics) OverallI thought when I opened the package, "Wow! A Simple Pocket Camcorder Which May Appeal to Some

==================================================================================================================================================> Please read important updates at the end of this report (the main part is as I wrote it on October 28, 2010) and CONSIDER VERY CAREFULLY before paying more than $20.00 for this 'ORPHAN' (manufacturer no longer in business, product no longer made) camcorder <==================================================================================================================================================This is well-constructed and takes decent video and sound. It was offered to me by Amazon Vine and I wanted to obtain it to see why it has been stated that Flip Video 'rules' the... 3/5 Lawrence H. Bulk "Lawrence H. Simple To Use

Customer Video Review Length:: 0:48 MinsFlip MinoHD Video Camera - Black, 8 GB, 2 Hours (3rd Generation) NEWEST MODEL The presentation after opening the outer box is really nice and certainly makes for a great gift!We didn't even have to read the directions. My 13 year old just started using it right away. The set up (time and date, etc) was a breeze. I love the fact that it had a charge right out of the box and is immediately ready to use. No media card needed. We played around with it for quite awhile and the video here shows the quality and zoom. The size is so convenient and easy to hold, it fits in the palm of your hand. All you have to do is turn it on and click the red button to start recording. Even though the screen is small (approx less than 2 inches) it has a quality display to see what you are taping. The sound quality is excellent as well. You can zoom with this but I don't know by how much. It didn't seem like a lot to me. I show that on the video... 5/5 P. Not the "upgrade" I was hoping for

FLIP video has done a great deal to prove to me as a repeat customer that they heavily weigh simplicity and ease of use when designing their products. My family owns two FLIP camcorders and it is clear to me that the previous version:-is a much better value for the money as I do not believe the minor updates on this "new" model warrant a $70 plus price increase (a nearly 50% premium!!!!)The new generation has maintained the small size and easy use of the second generation. They have added a new sensors and image stabilization to 720p video at 60fps. (Second gen-720p 30fps)I bought the 2nd generation flip minoHD (ASIN: B002R5AM7C) as a present for myself and my family to use for many different applications.

I've wanted to own a camcorder for a long time, and the Flip Ultra has finally met my standards for: quality, value, and ease of use. 5/5 Laura I (Fairchild AFB, WA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Flip Ultra Video Camera - Black, 4 GB, 2 Hours (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL (Electronics) Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?), May 26, 2009

"Gotta-Have" Accessory for Flip Ultra Camcorder---Get This Tripod!

Customer Video Review Length:: 1:49 Mins*****This tripod is the perfect accessory to the Flip Ultra Video Camcorder. I only wish I had ordered it sooner. It is an incredible value and greatly expands how you can use your camcorder. On this video, which is less than two minutes, I show you the tripod and how it can attach to various items. Then I let you see it work in action as I use a tripod for the first time. It will especially appeal to novice vloggers (like me) because it is so very easy to use!*****UPDATE: 7/17/08: This tripod also works with the new Flip Mino---YAY! 5/5 O. Brown "Ms. O. Buy the same thing for cheaper

This is a good tripod for the Flip Ultra, but why not buy either of these two instead? They are a lot less money and is pretty much exactly the same thing!:Really the only difference is the Vanguard model doesn't come with the different color feet and it doesn't say 'Flip'.Or you could get the Gorilla Pod:which is a bit more versatile in that you can attach it to a pole or edge of a chair,... 4/5 Mediahound (SF Bay Area, CA United States) - See all my reviews, March 25, 2008

    Lightweight, Flexible Accessory

You can't own a Flip Video (or any camera) without this nifty, lightweight tripod. It's a sturdy metal tripod that weighs about 12 ounces. The interchangeable rubber tips are a cool idea, but not really necessary unless you are a total "mix 'n match' freak. The legs are really flexible, which means you can mount this on just about any uneven surface. It would have been nice if they included a clip for vertical surfaces, but hey, for the price, it's a steal. 5/5 Martin A Hogan "Marty From SF" (San Francisco, CA. Makes it incredibly easy to shoot video of yourself
Comes with interchangeable colored rubber feet so you can match your Flip camcorder color, or mix and match
