Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

    Durable, high quality CD wallet

Let's start with the outside of the wallet. The design is elegant, and minimalistic, with a slight curve down the left front side, also serving as a handgrip, and a line through the middle, along with the Case Logic logo. The zipper has a rubber tab attached to it, and it zips open and closed without any hassles. The entire wallet has a very durable feel to it.Inside, each page lets you store two CDs, or a single CD, plus notes/game manuals. Pages flip easily, and discs seem easily to slide in and out as well, at least compared to the Velocity CD wallets which were recently on sale here at Amazon with rebates.Zipping the wallet up, turning it upside down, and banging on it, one finds that the discs stay in place, and don't slide towards the top, again, unlike the Velocity CD wallets where discs often slides towards the top just while turning pages. All in all, this is a very well thought-out CD wallet, with a nice design, and seemingly durable... 5/5 Phillip Roncoroni "goodcowfilms.com" (Manhattan, New York) - See all my reviews, September 5, 2005

It Will Survive A War...And Then Some (Seriously)

I've been a fan of Case Logic wallets for years; I'm generally a very active person who hauls his disks around for trips both short and long. I've owned some Caselogic wallets for 8+ years without ever having to replace it.Such is the situation for this Case Logic wallet. I've carried it around with me in Iraq for six months now, and it generally lives to its standards. Solid and crush-resistant, very durable, the only problem I've had with it is its tendency for one or two of the plastic disc holders have ripped. But such is the case with such heavy wear/tear. If you're like me, storing both album art and CD in the same sleeve, it's what you need. It also has a side pocket on the inside front cover for me to store back inserts and/or miscellaneous excess DVD/CD material that comes with the packaging.Buy this if you're mobile; buy it if friends tend to step on your case; buy this if through no fault of your own your cases are constantly abused. My Favorite Backpack

I've never enjoyed a backpack this much. In fact, I moved to messenger-style bags a while ago after finding backpacks uncomfortable. However, Case Logic really put some thought into this one, which you will notice the first time you put it on with something heavy inside. The straps are padded, wide, and contoured to balance the weight of the pack very nicely, using either one or both shoulder straps. A top handle is included as well, which is nice if I want to pick it up quickly to grab something. In terms of size, it is somewhere between the monster packs that allow you to tote around many college textbooks and the dainty packs that just fit a laptop. You can probably get away with fitting in two big textbooks, along with a chunky laptop and accessories. I also keep an umbrella inside and it fits perfectly. The many pockets are arranged well to maximize the space, too. A padded pocket is included for glasses or scratchable gear and there are drink pockets on the... 5/5 Nerd Alert (USA) - See all my reviews, February 17, 2011

Not a good choice for students

First off, this backpack will keep your laptop and various peripherals intact. There is a great amount of protection built it. There are, as others have noted, some pockets for other small things that you may wish to carry. However, this backpack is a very poor choice for anyone who wants to carry anything substantial, other than a laptop. Mostly I'm thinking of students. A lot of students (like myself) carry a laptop and a lot of books to class everyday and there's just not enough room for what I need to bring with me. There are other alternatives with more storage for big items (Jan Sport and Victorinox both have good options), so I would recommend looking elsewhere. If all you're looking to do is carry a laptop and a few small things, I would additionally caution you that the design is very boxy and unappealing from an aesthetic standpoint. It's just kind of bland, square, and unimpressive. Yes, this probably isn't a big factor to everyone, but it will be to some people... 3/5 Steward Willons (Illinois) - See all my reviews, December 17, 2010

    NICE!......There's a Pocket for EVERYTHING!

Life is Good!Without this selection from Vine, I would probably never have gotten myself a backpack like this. While I have a laptop, I seldom, have almost never, taken it out of the house with me. Additionally, I guess I always felt that these things were for kids and yuppie-types (imagine)! (I'm 63, by the way!)Now, things have Changed! I LOVE this pack, and it has been "traveling" with me a lot since my U**man delivered it! It's so much more fun now to go to the coffeeshop(s) and use wifi to surf and work, and also when I visit the library....I cannot believe what I have been missing out on for the easy availability that I could have had to check things while I have been away from home!As others here have noted, there are certainly pockets enough for just about anything you would with to "have with you". While I wear glasses, so don't ever carry sunglasses, I do need computer glasses, and so even that pocket is great for me and serves a very... 5/5 Gregory E. This briefcase only weighs 21 ounces (1 pound 5 ounces), including the shoulder strap, which is lighter than many laptop bags. The exterior feels like soft neoprene while all interiors are lined with nylon. The main laptop compartment has dimensions of 15.25 inches wide and 11.25 inches deep, and can accomodate a laptop of 15.2"x10.5"x1.7". As I slid it back and fourth to try and get it to catch the ZIPPER BROKE.Initially I planned to get a replacement sent but as I read reviews citing the bag's slim profile impeding storage I experimented with it and found that the slim bag bulges awkwardly when storing blocky objects like AC adapters and mice, in the end I got a refundSummary of my experience-broken zipper-no space for ac adapter-chose refund 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 29, 2012

This review is from: Case Logic DLC-115 15.6-Inch Laptop and Tablet Briefcase (Black) (Personal Computers) Case arrived in easy to open packaging which is always nice. It is as described. It is roomy enough for my netbook, kindle fire, ipod, external cd drive, all the cords, wires, a notebook, miscellaneous peripherals AND there is still room left over for more stuff. It is well padded to protect my items and no bulk once everything was loaded in there. You would never know I have so much stuff in there. It is not heavy either. My last bag was fancy but it weighed almost as much as all the stuff I had in it and not fun to carry around....but it looked nice. This bag is well made, looks nice and I suspect it will last for a very long time. I had no issues with the zippers and items slip in and out easily. I would recommend this case to anyone looking for a roomy solution in a quality bag. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 30, 2012

Sturdy, Reinforced Top, Nice Strap Inside

Customer Video Review Length:: 6:05 MinsOverall, this is a quality case. Whether it fits your device well is entirely up to whether your device dimensions fit the dimensions of the case well. There is no foam padding inside, but it has a nice one inch wide elastic strap that runs the length that holds the device fairly well. But without foam, it will not have much shock resistance if you want to throw it around. But you do gain a slim case without a lot of foam padding. The shell is quite firm, not foam, and seems to protect very well. The top is reinforced and is stronger than the bottom half, so I would orient any LCD screens face up. Like any case, the weak point is if compressed in the center you can flex in if you squeeze it. But it seems significantly stronger than foam or some cheaper alternatives. It would have been nice if the bottom was reinforced as much as the top, but the bottom is still quite firm, just not as resistant to compression. I just wouldn't this at the bottom of... 5/5 Tiger (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

    Dependable, solid, large

This Case-Logic CD carrier is a good, solid storage device. It is pretty standard wallet, with space for 208 CDs or DVDs divided into 26 pages of sleeves (4 CDs each side, front and back), plus space for an additional 16 CDs inside the front cover. Although it is a tight squeeze, it is possible to fit both the CD and the booklet or liner notes into the same sleeve. The pages are held in place in a ring-binder type arrangement, so it is possible to unlock them and take individual pages out of the case, if you want to remove them for travel (or possibly to add more pages for more storage.)The sleeves are well padded, so your discs shouldn't get scratched. The top, bottom, and binding of the case are solid, and leave the contents well protected. I've had my case a few months and haven't had any significant wear or tear- the zipper seems to hold up well, too.Obviously, when full of 200+ discs, the case can get pretty heavy, and isnt going to be something that you want to... 5/5 D. Great solution to CD Storage -- get rid of your jewel cases!

It is wonderful grabbing one of these cases and flipping thru the pages to find my CDs, rather than pawing thru jewel cases, knocking over the stacks of them, and giving up after a half hour of searching. I have 3 CDW-320's, each holding a different genre of music. In a fire, I could grab all three cases and go, where that would've been impossible before. By my calculations, the physical space used by my CD collection has decreased by 40%!The way to do what I did is to get rid of the jewel cases entirely. To do that, do this for each CD you own:1) Each side of each CDW-320 page has four pockets. Put the CD in one of the two top-most Pockets on a page.2) Put the CD's booklet in the pocket underneath its CD.3) Finally, pop open the CD case (it takes just a little force) and pry out the back-of-the-CD card. Straighten out the folds of that card, and slide it in sideways into the bottom pocket, behind the CD's booklet. It will... 5/5 W. L. Like the other Case Logic CDW wallets, this one has removalbe pages, holds the discs securely, and has room for rather substantial liner notes. It's true, CL has "improved" this product. In the process they ruined it. For one thing, they removed several features, for instance the new version does not have the removable fast file and lacks the slot for a label on the handle. Also, it is about 30% lighter, and obviously "cheaper" in many respects, e.g the sides are now lightweight nylon. Even the protection it provides for the cd's that you put it in it is outstanding. I'm a scratch freak and I've noticed that Case Logic wallets do not put any scratches what-so-ever on your cd's or dvd's. Not even those little really light ones that you only see in bright light. Nothing bad to say about them at all, it was pretty much everything a CD wallet should be, at it's finest. BUT!, new this year is the redesigned version of these wallets and they are TERRIBLE! The previous models were superior to any other cd wallet out there. Now they have BROWN STITCHING put against black koskin leather. The handle looks completely cheap and it comes from inside the wallet. Letting you know that there is no telling what is holding it in place. The mesh screen IN the handle is gone, so no more labels can... 1/5 Jeremy Clark (Carterville, IL USA) - See all my reviews, July 26, 2006

Item is slightly different than picture

0 5/5 gabe (university of california, berkeley, ca, usa) - See all my reviews This review is from: Case Logic KSW-320 Koskin 336 Capacity CD/DVD Prosleeves Wallet (Black) (Electronics) I just received this case in the mail today. This is the second one I have bought off of amazon (this exact item), but this one was not exactly the case described and pictured above. It had a cardboard sleeve/carton wrapped around it that also described and pictured this item as it appears above. The cardboard wrapper didn't match the item in it.I like the new design better though. It looks nicer, the Koskin material is slightly brown, but just barely (it looks black until you inspect it closely). The Handle is more secure, actually attached inside the material.THE ONLY BAD DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE 16 SLOTS IN THE FRONT OF THE CASE AREN'T REMOVABLE, LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. I own the other case (the one described and picture above), and the removable 16 CD folder is pretty handy.Otherwise, I'm happy with the changes and will not return it. In fact, I'm ordering another one!! BUT, AMAZON SHOULD CHANGE THEIR DESCRIPTION. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 14, 2006

Fits an impressive array of gadgetry

When I first received this case I was disappointed, thinking my larger point-and-shoot cameras would never fit inside, as the length looked too short. After trying and succeeding in fitting every piece of handheld electronicery in my arsenal, I'm thrilled with it!Internal dimensions of the large main compartment are: 4 ¾" tall x 3 1/8" wide x 1 ½" deep (low estimate, probably will fit cameras slightly larger). My Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 fits easily without a struggle, with room for the strap, and enough space to easily remove the camera quickly (this camera measures 4 1/8" long x 2 ½" wide x 1 3/8" deep).Front compartment has a main pocket that's nearly 4" deep and over 2" wide - suitable for extra batteries and whatnot - I tested with two Panasonic and two Canon batteries, both sets fit perfectly without overtaxing the compartment, and there was still room for some cash or small items. A smaller sleeve pocket is located at the inside front flap, this shorter... 5/5 P. Falcioni "Ducatisti" (Central Oregon, United States) - See all my reviews, June 24, 2010

Nicely made, very well padded...would recommend for a small/compact camera

This is a very nice little camera case. This is definitely for a small, COMPACT digital camera -- my older, bulkier Canon A95 (which takes 4 AA batteries) won't fit, but my new Olympus Stylus Tough will. Your camera should be no more than 2 or maybe 2 1/2 inches high, and no wider than about 3 or 3 1/2 inches. (A camera that takes 4 AA batteries is probably too thick and NOT likely to fit.)This case is VERY well padded -- something that I appreciate. Even the little front pocket (that can hold an extra memory card or even a couple of small batteries) is padded. And the front pocket has a little pocket-within-a-pocket, for those teeny tiny new memory cards that would get lost otherwise. The zippers are nice -- they slide smoothly, and there is no annoying "flap" covering them to get caught. Even the zipper pulls are rubbery to make opening and closing the case easier. The gray color is nice as far as not showing dirt, and also doesn't look too... 5/5 Nelly "Vision Teacher" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews This review is from: Case Logic DCB-302 Compact Camera Case (Gray) (Electronics) Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program (What's this?) Absolutely PERFECT for NIKON S8100

0 5/5 cmhguy1980 (Columbus, OH) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic DCB-302 Compact Case for Camera - Black (Camera) I hope this review finds you with ease if you're an owner of a Nikon S8100. You wouldn't believe (or maybe you would, if you experienced what I did) the extremely difficult task of finding a case to fit my Nikon S8100 on Amazon. First off, most the suggestions for "Nikon S8100 Cases" in the search box are bogus. THEY DON'T FIT (per other user reviews for the cases, contradicting the title/headline of the items completely). This case fits PERFECTLY and has room in front compartment for an extra battery or two and memory cards.Outside of the fit, the case is very durable and does not look or feel cheap at all. All in all, in my opinion, a great investment.Thank you for taking the time to read my review. I truly hope this was very helpful to you. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 5, 2011

Fantastic Protective Sleeve For Macbook Pro's & Google Chrome Cr-48

Case Logic, Inc. has been around since 1984, which is probably right about the time I bought my first Case Logic case for my cassette tapes. Over the years, as they added items to their product line, so I added their products to my collection. As a sample, I believe I have owned at one point or another, Case Logic cassette cases, CD & DVD cases, CD player cases, Zip Drive cases, trunk organizers, and more. I'm looking around my home office and I can spot several of their products and I bet you do too. Case Logic's 13.3 Laptop Sleeve (LAPS-113) is one of many sleeves that Case Logic makes and it just might be the perfect protective, no frills sleeve for your 13.3-inch or smaller laptop.PROS:- No nonsense, sleek design- 6mm EVA foam padding- Smooth gliding zipper- Protective lip prevents damage from zipperCONS:- Slight rubbery odorI define my perfect laptop sleeve to be one that has no handles, pockets, zippers, or bulk... 5/5 Ed (San Francisco Bay Area) - See all my reviews, March 1, 2011

    good little case

0 4/5 Nicole Machi (Bass Lake, CA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Case Logic LAPS-113 13.3-Inch Laptop / MacBook Air / MacBook Pro Retina Display Sleeve (Red) (Personal Computers) I've been using this case a couple weeks and like it so far. I strongly recommend NOT BUYING THE RED ONE! I ordered it thinking black would be too boring but the red is not like the picture and its quite an ugly red.The case is soft with a few millimeters of foam. It isn't going to save your computer, but it will keep it from small scratches and dings while its being transported.I'd love a case that offered a bit of moisture protection, which this certainly does not, but for the price, it definitely meets my expectations. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 19, 2012
