Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

Sturdy, Reinforced Top, Nice Strap Inside

Customer Video Review Length:: 6:05 MinsOverall, this is a quality case. Whether it fits your device well is entirely up to whether your device dimensions fit the dimensions of the case well. There is no foam padding inside, but it has a nice one inch wide elastic strap that runs the length that holds the device fairly well. But without foam, it will not have much shock resistance if you want to throw it around. But you do gain a slim case without a lot of foam padding. The shell is quite firm, not foam, and seems to protect very well. The top is reinforced and is stronger than the bottom half, so I would orient any LCD screens face up. Like any case, the weak point is if compressed in the center you can flex in if you squeeze it. But it seems significantly stronger than foam or some cheaper alternatives. It would have been nice if the bottom was reinforced as much as the top, but the bottom is still quite firm, just not as resistant to compression. I just wouldn't this at the bottom of... 5/5 Tiger (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

Great case but beware of SIZE!!!

0 4/5 CC (Montana) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic Portable EVA Hard Drive Case QHDC-101 - Red (Personal Computers) I purchased this case along with a 1TB Seagate Portable Hard Drive. I looked at the dimensions of the hard drive (4.8 x 3.2 x 0.6) and compared to the dimensions of the case (5.3 x 3.5 x 1.5) and felt very comfortable that it would be adequately sized to house the hard drive. I was wrong! While the case is a perfect fit for the length & depth of the hard drive (the 5.3 and 1.5 sides) it falls over 0.5 short on the width. The dimensions given were obviously exterior and not the "usable" space. So beware.Other than that the case is great with a very handy net compartment on one side and has a very hard & sturdy construction. I'm going to keep it and use for my memory media cards.UPDATE: I just went online to buy a new case for the hard drive....and saw exactly why I bought this case....it was the "also sold with this product" noted on the amazon page. Urggg. Even more frustrating that it was grouped with a hard drive that it doesn't even fit. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 18, 2012

I got this case in the blue color with a contrasting bright yellow interior. The material is all-around high-quality, and the case offers excellent protection for my external hard drive(s).Since this is a universal drive case it cannot be a perfect fit for every portable hard drive out there. not well suited for macbook pro 15"

0 4/5 LookingForQ - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic LAPS-116 15 - 16-Inch Laptop Sleeve (Black) (Personal Computers) This seems like a nice useful sleeve. Not too bulky. If you're thinking about this for your macbook pro 15" (especially retina) the 14" sleeve is close but too small and the 15-15.6 sleeve is too big by almost an inch in each dimension.Another potential issue is that the backside of the zipper is exposed to the inside of the case so it could come in contact with the laptop as it moved around. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 30, 2012

    My Favorite Backpack

I've never enjoyed a backpack this much. In fact, I moved to messenger-style bags a while ago after finding backpacks uncomfortable. However, Case Logic really put some thought into this one, which you will notice the first time you put it on with something heavy inside. The straps are padded, wide, and contoured to balance the weight of the pack very nicely, using either one or both shoulder straps. A top handle is included as well, which is nice if I want to pick it up quickly to grab something. In terms of size, it is somewhere between the monster packs that allow you to tote around many college textbooks and the dainty packs that just fit a laptop. You can probably get away with fitting in two big textbooks, along with a chunky laptop and accessories. I also keep an umbrella inside and it fits perfectly. The many pockets are arranged well to maximize the space, too. A padded pocket is included for glasses or scratchable gear and there are drink pockets on the... 5/5 Nerd Alert (USA) - See all my reviews, February 17, 2011

Not a good choice for students

First off, this backpack will keep your laptop and various peripherals intact. There is a great amount of protection built it. There are, as others have noted, some pockets for other small things that you may wish to carry. However, this backpack is a very poor choice for anyone who wants to carry anything substantial, other than a laptop. Mostly I'm thinking of students. A lot of students (like myself) carry a laptop and a lot of books to class everyday and there's just not enough room for what I need to bring with me. There are other alternatives with more storage for big items (Jan Sport and Victorinox both have good options), so I would recommend looking elsewhere. If all you're looking to do is carry a laptop and a few small things, I would additionally caution you that the design is very boxy and unappealing from an aesthetic standpoint. It's just kind of bland, square, and unimpressive. Yes, this probably isn't a big factor to everyone, but it will be to some people... 3/5 Steward Willons (Iowa) - See all my reviews, December 17, 2010

    NICE!......There's a Pocket for EVERYTHING!

Life is Good!Without this selection from Vine, I would probably never have gotten myself a backpack like this. While I have a laptop, I seldom, have almost never, taken it out of the house with me. Additionally, I guess I always felt that these things were for kids and yuppie-types (imagine)! (I'm 63, by the way!)Now, things have Changed! I LOVE this pack, and it has been "traveling" with me a lot since my U**man delivered it! It's so much more fun now to go to the coffeeshop(s) and use wifi to surf and work, and also when I visit the library....I cannot believe what I have been missing out on for the easy availability that I could have had to check things while I have been away from home!As others here have noted, there are certainly pockets enough for just about anything you would with to "have with you". While I wear glasses, so don't ever carry sunglasses, I do need computer glasses, and so even that pocket is great for me and serves a very... 5/5 Gregory E. "Improved"? The new version is garbage!

NOTE added 8 Feb 2015My review of this product is now almost a decade old. I'm not going to delete it, and I stand by what I said about the change made to the product all those years ago. But I would also say that this old review should probably not be considered representative of whatever Case Logic is currently shipping under this UPC code. Anyone considering this product today should probably pay more attention to more recent reviews.Original, unedited 2006 review follows:It's true, CL has "improved" this product. In the process they ruined it. For one thing, they removed several features, for instance the new version does not have the removable fast file and lacks the slot for a label on the handle. Also, it is about 30% lighter, and obviously "cheaper" in many respects, e.g the sides are now lightweight nylon. I would be surprised if one of these new models holds up for even 30% as long as the old one. And it's UGLY: brown stitching on... 1/5 Tom S. Someone from Case Logic PLEASE read my review along with the 2 before me

I will admit that hands down case logic is THE BEST cd wallets you can buy. They are (usually) constructed with great quality and you actually feel that you get your money's worth. Even the protection it provides for the cd's that you put it in it is outstanding. I'm a scratch freak and I've noticed that Case Logic wallets do not put any scratches what-so-ever on your cd's or dvd's. Not even those little really light ones that you only see in bright light. Nothing bad to say about them at all, it was pretty much everything a CD wallet should be, at it's finest. BUT!, new this year is the redesigned version of these wallets and they are TERRIBLE! The previous models were superior to any other cd wallet out there. Now they have BROWN STITCHING put against black koskin leather. The handle looks completely cheap and it comes from inside the wallet. Letting you know that there is no telling what is holding it in place. The mesh screen IN the handle is gone, so no more labels can... 1/5 Jeremy Clark (Carterville, IL USA) - See all my reviews, July 26, 2006

0 5/5 gabe (university of california, berkeley, ca, usa) - See all my reviews This review is from: Case Logic KSW-320 Koskin 336 Capacity CD/DVD Prosleeves Wallet (Black) (Electronics) I just received this case in the mail today. This is the second one I have bought off of amazon (this exact item), but this one was not exactly the case described and pictured above. It had a cardboard sleeve/carton wrapped around it that also described and pictured this item as it appears above. The cardboard wrapper didn't match the item in it.I like the new design better though. It looks nicer, the Koskin material is slightly brown, but just barely (it looks black until you inspect it closely). The Handle is more secure, actually attached inside the material.THE ONLY BAD DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE 16 SLOTS IN THE FRONT OF THE CASE AREN'T REMOVABLE, LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. I own the other case (the one described and picture above), and the removable 16 CD folder is pretty handy.Otherwise, I'm happy with the changes and will not return it. In fact, I'm ordering another one!! BUT, AMAZON SHOULD CHANGE THEIR DESCRIPTION. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 14, 2006

The biggest mini backpack--Not too small, Not too big

This is the size I've been looking for. I was in search of a bag that would fit a 13" MacBook Pro, as well as a 13" Dell Latitude. I'm not a big person and I hate big heavy bags. 0 3/5 Max L. (Colorado) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic DLBP-114 14-Inch Laptop /MacBook Air / Pro Retina Display Backpack (Black) (Personal Computers) This is a good choice for a small backpack. If you need to carry much more than the laptop, charger and some small accessories you may find this doesn't have the space to meet you needs. Quality is what I expect for Case Logic, very good for the price. No issues with zippers or seams, even after heavy use. Another nice feature is the textured mesh on the underside of the shoulder strap that helps keep it from slipping off your shoulder. The one and only downside is the lack of padding on the bottom of the pack. Leaving an unprotected edge for the laptop, which I discovered when the pack slipped out of my hand and landed with a thump, resulting in a dent on the corner of my laptop. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 31, 2012

    Great compact tech backpack

I was looking for a backpack to replace a 15-year old Target/Walmart-type backpack from high school. I wanted something that I could take to/from work, was flexible enough in offering a few different types of compartments, and wasn't overly big/bulky/saggy.This is exactly what I wanted. We'll start with the straps. They aren't filled with gel like some packs are, so they aren't the cushiest, but they do at least have a decent amount of stuffing in them, plus they are fairly wide, and get larger as they go up towards your shoulder, so the bag doesn't feel like it's cutting into your shoulders at all. The roll-up velcro piece that holds excess strap after you're done adjusting it to your preference is quite novel, but not something you interact with every time you wear the pack, so it's not a huge deal. The top and the lower front of the pack each have a reasonably-sized grab handle. Good for carrying into your car, or hanging on a coat hook at... 5/5 Matthew Fugel (Atlanta GA) - See all my reviews, March 17, 2012
