Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

    Dependable, solid, large

This Case-Logic CD carrier is a good, solid storage device. It is pretty standard wallet, with space for 208 CDs or DVDs divided into 26 pages of sleeves (4 CDs each side, front and back), plus space for an additional 16 CDs inside the front cover. Although it is a tight squeeze, it is possible to fit both the CD and the booklet or liner notes into the same sleeve. The pages are held in place in a ring-binder type arrangement, so it is possible to unlock them and take individual pages out of the case, if you want to remove them for travel (or possibly to add more pages for more storage.)The sleeves are well padded, so your discs shouldn't get scratched. The top, bottom, and binding of the case are solid, and leave the contents well protected. I've had my case a few months and haven't had any significant wear or tear- the zipper seems to hold up well, too.Obviously, when full of 200+ discs, the case can get pretty heavy, and isnt going to be something that you want to... 5/5 D. A first rate product

Like the other Case Logic CDW wallets, this one has removalbe pages, holds the discs securely, and has room for rather substantial liner notes. Those that won't fit in the sleeves will fit in the pockets up front.Because of the unique design of the locking system however, inserting papges is not particularly easy -- the rings lock in front of the first page, so to insert a page, you have to pull out all of the pages in front of it. It would have made more sense to have it lock in the back -- that is where you would either want to add pages, or remove the extra ones. All in all, we are pleased ... it is a great way to store our cd's, it gets rid of that major shelving system we bought only for our discs, and, frankly, the discs are more accessible, than in some of those fancy jewell cases. My favorite aspect of the wallets is that we actually listen to our music more -- we were storing our discs in our library -- away from our stereo, so you actually... 4/5 bob - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great solution to CD Storage -- get rid of your jewel cases!

It is wonderful grabbing one of these cases and flipping thru the pages to find my CDs, rather than pawing thru jewel cases, knocking over the stacks of them, and giving up after a half hour of searching. I have 3 CDW-320's, each holding a different genre of music. In a fire, I could grab all three cases and go, where that would've been impossible before. By my calculations, the physical space used by my CD collection has decreased by 40%!The way to do what I did is to get rid of the jewel cases entirely. To do that, do this for each CD you own:1) Each side of each CDW-320 page has four pockets. Put the CD in one of the two top-most Pockets on a page.2) Put the CD's booklet in the pocket underneath its CD.3) Finally, pop open the CD case (it takes just a little force) and pry out the back-of-the-CD card. Straighten out the folds of that card, and slide it in sideways into the bottom pocket, behind the CD's booklet. It will... 5/5 W. L. Case Logic Portable Hard Drive Case does it's job

I bought this case to protect my Western Digital 250 GB portable USB hard drive, as I move the drive around a lot between home and work. I'm using the hard drive to back up my iTunes music collection, so I want to take care of it, hence I purchased this Case Logic case. The case is easy to use. When you open it up, you'll find two compartments (one on each side). One has an elastic strap that snuggly holds your hard drive in position. The other compartment has a mesh flap which acts like a pocket, so you can have a space to put a USB cable and maybe a flash drive or two in a pinch. As the case is small, it isn't really designed such that you can leave the hard drive in the case during operation. There isn't enough room for the connector to fit when it is placed in the drive, without the cable putting undue stress... 4/5 R. Great for light travel, short trips

This is a very nice, albeit very somewhat thin, case. It would be best used for a short day-trip, or it would make a fairly good carry-on if you can cram everything else into your second carry-on, or if you've checked luggage. It is really designed to be lean and light, and it does a pretty good job at that.It has a fairly roomy zippered compartment on the very front for any quick-access items; airplane tickets will fit nicely in there, as it pretty much runs the full length of the bag. The outermost (nearest the front) top zippered compartment has slots for pens, and a few small, open compartments for things like credit cards, etc.The main section has one sleeve for a laptop, which is decently padded. Another sleeve is right against the laptop compartment, and is meant to hold your tablet. What I don't like is that this tablet sleeve has absolutely no padding on the front side at all; it is just thin material. You would definitely not want to store your... 4/5 MW (Miramar, Florida United States) - See all my reviews, February 8, 2015

Good for Its price, smaller than it looks.

Update: Closing to 2 years of heavy use and travelling with this backpack, I stand corrected. I did not expect it to last this long, but its current state is dreadful and I highly doubt I'll be able to use it while travelling anymore. The bag still looks ok overall, but it is clearly worn out now. I have to mention that after a year of use it stopped squeaking, and the internal compartments are as good as new. I have been looking for a proper replacement for this backpack that would hold my laptop and still have enough space while maintaining a smart look but I cannot seem to find the right one. Most backpacks that fit my rather large laptop look like hiking backpacks which are huge, and I certainly don't need that much space for a laptop backpack. I'm still holding onto it, and at this point I am actually considering getting another one.Original Review:I have had this backpack for around a month now. Ok, But There are Better Options Available in the Same Price Range

The best way I can describe the Case Logic Case is small. It does have an internal pocket for a 15.6 inch laptop and a pocket for an iPad sized tablet. The one thing I really don't like about the table pocket is the lack of a velcro closure to keep it in place. The laptop pocket doesn't have a closure either however, a laptop of that size is less likely to move around. The large internal pocket isn't big enough for students, high school or college, to carry a reasonable amount of book and binders for class. The external pocket on the outer flap is big in terms of vertical space but lacks in depth. If you pack the bag out you might be able to get your ID, small wallet, mobile phone or keys in the pocket but not much else. There are two decent sized water bottle pouches on the sides. They will hold standard 16oz water bottles and you can get a 24oz Contigo in the pockets without much concern. The straps are not long enough or comfortable enough if you have heavier... 2/5 Dennis Meek (Rogers, AR USA) - See all my reviews, February 15, 2015
