Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

Fantastic Protective Sleeve For Macbook Pro's & Google Chrome Cr-48

Case Logic, Inc. has been around since 1984, which is probably right about the time I bought my first Case Logic case for my cassette tapes. Over the years, as they added items to their product line, so I added their products to my collection. As a sample, I believe I have owned at one point or another, Case Logic cassette cases, CD & DVD cases, CD player cases, Zip Drive cases, trunk organizers, and more. I'm looking around my home office and I can spot several of their products and I bet you do too. Case Logic's 13.3 Laptop Sleeve (LAPS-113) is one of many sleeves that Case Logic makes and it just might be the perfect protective, no frills sleeve for your 13.3-inch or smaller laptop.PROS:- No nonsense, sleek design- 6mm EVA foam padding- Smooth gliding zipper- Protective lip prevents damage from zipperCONS:- Slight rubbery odorI define my perfect laptop sleeve to be one that has no handles, pockets, zippers, or bulk... 5/5 Ed (San Francisco Bay Area) - See all my reviews, March 1, 2011

    Sleek and secure

I was expecting a mere utilitarian sleeve to hold my 13" Mac Pro laptop. I am delighted that it also provides some aesthetic satisfaction. The color is a solid inky black, with no lighter threads in the design. The Case Logic logo on the front is small, with the yellow-orange square of half-sun that pops out stylishly and yet is unobtrusive. The woven webbing on the sides is a nice nifty touch. The top-loading zipper--which is a primary feature for me in determining quality--is sturdy and smooth, and slides like buttah from one side to the other. It won't scratch your laptop because it has a protective lip. The 6 millimeter foam padding feels substantial and secure, and my laptop slips in easily, like a card in an envelope. It fits snugly but not too tightly, either.External dimensions are 14 x 1.1 x 10" and internal dimensions are 13 x 1.1 x 9.1" The exterior and lining is made of 100% polyester. The attached description card says "25 Years Quality... 5/5 "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews, April 8, 2011

I strongly recommend NOT BUYING THE RED ONE! I ordered it thinking black would be too boring but the red is not like the picture and its quite an ugly red.The case is soft with a few millimeters of foam. It isn't going to save your computer, but it will keep it from small scratches and dings while its being transported.I'd love a case that offered a bit of moisture protection, which this certainly does not, but for the price, it definitely meets my expectations. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 19, 2012

    Dependable, solid, large

This Case-Logic CD carrier is a good, solid storage device. It is pretty standard wallet, with space for 208 CDs or DVDs divided into 26 pages of sleeves (4 CDs each side, front and back), plus space for an additional 16 CDs inside the front cover. Although it is a tight squeeze, it is possible to fit both the CD and the booklet or liner notes into the same sleeve. The pages are held in place in a ring-binder type arrangement, so it is possible to unlock them and take individual pages out of the case, if you want to remove them for travel (or possibly to add more pages for more storage.)The sleeves are well padded, so your discs shouldn't get scratched. The top, bottom, and binding of the case are solid, and leave the contents well protected. I've had my case a few months and haven't had any significant wear or tear- the zipper seems to hold up well, too.Obviously, when full of 200+ discs, the case can get pretty heavy, and isnt going to be something that you want to... 5/5 D. Great solution to CD Storage -- get rid of your jewel cases!

It is wonderful grabbing one of these cases and flipping thru the pages to find my CDs, rather than pawing thru jewel cases, knocking over the stacks of them, and giving up after a half hour of searching. I have 3 CDW-320's, each holding a different genre of music. In a fire, I could grab all three cases and go, where that would've been impossible before. By my calculations, the physical space used by my CD collection has decreased by 40%!The way to do what I did is to get rid of the jewel cases entirely. To do that, do this for each CD you own:1) Each side of each CDW-320 page has four pockets. Put the CD in one of the two top-most Pockets on a page.2) Put the CD's booklet in the pocket underneath its CD.3) Finally, pop open the CD case (it takes just a little force) and pry out the back-of-the-CD card. Straighten out the folds of that card, and slide it in sideways into the bottom pocket, behind the CD's booklet. It will... 5/5 W. L. I was able to cram my Seagate GoFlex hard drive plus cable inside this case, but it was so tight that I'm concerned about the zipper eventually breaking. To store the drive, I much prefer the AmazonBasics Universal Camera Case for Digital Cameras HF (Black)which fits the GoFlex perfectly, has a zippered pocket for the cable, plenty of padding for protection, and even costs a few dollars less. This case is fine for storing items such as cameras, smartphones or video mp3 players, up to about 3.25 x 5.25 inches. If the device is less than an inch thick, you can put flash drives, batteries or memory cards in the pocket.UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who found this review helpful! I recently received a Seagate Slim hard drive through the Vine program, and it fits just perfectly in this case, with room to spare for the cable. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , August 24, 2011

Nice, but be sure this is what you want ...

Please note, there are 4 sizes (10, 10.2, 14, and 16 inches) of the same case type; I am writing a review of the 16-inch case. This is a well-made but relatively inexpensive bag for a laptop PC. It is so light that I can barely feel its weight, but it still has sufficient padding to protect its contents against bumps during everyday use. This is NOT the kind of case with zippers that can be pulled further to the left and right sides when you open the bag. In other words, the opening for you to put in and take out things is very small. Does this matter? Yes, if you have a laptop PC that measures diagonally 15.6 to 16 inches. The fit is snug, and because of the narrow opening, putting in and taking out a computer is not that smooth and easy. Although the zippers are plastic, there is a chance of them scraping against the computer's edges. I would not recommend this case if you have concerns about this aspect. If your computer is a netbook, which is about 10 inches... 3/5 Amazonian Consumer - See all my reviews, March 22, 2010

    very well padded

This laptop bag is very well padded inside that I almost wanted this bad formy cameras. The design looks very simple, yet the interior pockets andpadding are very well made. Because of its cloth material, it feels littlebit cheap, but then again it is very light. There is also enough room fortwo laptops, maybe one 13 inch Mac book Pro and a 10 inch Net book, with allthe power blocks in the front pocket. There is an additional small pocketfor a cell phone or other small accessories, and I liked this pocket a lotbecause it is easy to reach, not to mention its location is convenient. Icould not find any cons about this bag, not only because it comes with ashoulder strap, but also because it has a "25 Years Quality Guarantee"stamp. I probably won't use this bag for 25 years, but it is good to knowthat the company guarantees its product. "Improved"? The new version is garbage!

It's true, CL has "improved" this product. In the process they ruined it. For one thing, they removed several features, for instance the new version does not have the removable fast file and lacks the slot for a label on the handle. Also, it is about 30% lighter, and obviously "cheaper" in many respects, e.g the sides are now lightweight nylon. I would be surprised if one of these new models holds up for even 30% as long as the old one. And it's UGLY: brown stitching on black faux leather looks awful! There is one actual improvement in the new one - it was easier to open flat on a table. And one possible improvement - the attachment of the handle is apparently different, but you can't really tell if it's any better because it is hidden on the new one.You can't blame Amazon - the new and the old one have the same UPC code (8585405012). Someone from Case Logic PLEASE read my review along with the 2 before me

I will admit that hands down case logic is THE BEST cd wallets you can buy. They are (usually) constructed with great quality and you actually feel that you get your money's worth. Even the protection it provides for the cd's that you put it in it is outstanding. I'm a scratch freak and I've noticed that Case Logic wallets do not put any scratches what-so-ever on your cd's or dvd's. Not even those little really light ones that you only see in bright light. Nothing bad to say about them at all, it was pretty much everything a CD wallet should be, at it's finest. BUT!, new this year is the redesigned version of these wallets and they are TERRIBLE! The previous models were superior to any other cd wallet out there. Now they have BROWN STITCHING put against black koskin leather. The handle looks completely cheap and it comes from inside the wallet. Letting you know that there is no telling what is holding it in place. This is the second one I have bought off of amazon (this exact item), but this one was not exactly the case described and pictured above. It had a cardboard sleeve/carton wrapped around it that also described and pictured this item as it appears above. The cardboard wrapper didn't match the item in it.I like the new design better though. It looks nicer, the Koskin material is slightly brown, but just barely (it looks black until you inspect it closely). The Handle is more secure, actually attached inside the material.THE ONLY BAD DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE 16 SLOTS IN THE FRONT OF THE CASE AREN'T REMOVABLE, LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. I own the other case (the one described and picture above), and the removable 16 CD folder is pretty handy.Otherwise, I'm happy with the changes and will not return it. My Favorite Backpack

I've never enjoyed a backpack this much. In fact, I moved to messenger-style bags a while ago after finding backpacks uncomfortable. However, Case Logic really put some thought into this one, which you will notice the first time you put it on with something heavy inside. The straps are padded, wide, and contoured to balance the weight of the pack very nicely, using either one or both shoulder straps. A top handle is included as well, which is nice if I want to pick it up quickly to grab something. In terms of size, it is somewhere between the monster packs that allow you to tote around many college textbooks and the dainty packs that just fit a laptop. You can probably get away with fitting in two big textbooks, along with a chunky laptop and accessories. I also keep an umbrella inside and it fits perfectly. The many pockets are arranged well to maximize the space, too. Not a good choice for students

First off, this backpack will keep your laptop and various peripherals intact. There is a great amount of protection built it. There are, as others have noted, some pockets for other small things that you may wish to carry. However, this backpack is a very poor choice for anyone who wants to carry anything substantial, other than a laptop. Mostly I'm thinking of students. A lot of students (like myself) carry a laptop and a lot of books to class everyday and there's just not enough room for what I need to bring with me. There are other alternatives with more storage for big items (Jan Sport and Victorinox both have good options), so I would recommend looking elsewhere. If all you're looking to do is carry a laptop and a few small things, I would additionally caution you that the design is very boxy and unappealing from an aesthetic standpoint. It's just kind of bland, square, and unimpressive. Yes, this probably isn't a big factor to everyone, but it will be to some people... 3/5 Steward Willons (Iowa) - See all my reviews, December 17, 2010

Life is Good!Without this selection from Vine, I would probably never have gotten myself a backpack like this. It's so much more fun now to go to the coffeeshop(s) and use wifi to surf and work, and also when I visit the library....I cannot believe what I have been missing out on for the easy availability that I could have had to check things while I have been away from home!As others here have noted, there are certainly pockets enough for just about anything you would with to "have with you".
