Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

Sturdy, Reinforced Top, Nice Strap Inside

Customer Video Review Length:: 6:05 MinsOverall, this is a quality case. Whether it fits your device well is entirely up to whether your device dimensions fit the dimensions of the case well. There is no foam padding inside, but it has a nice one inch wide elastic strap that runs the length that holds the device fairly well. But without foam, it will not have much shock resistance if you want to throw it around. But you do gain a slim case without a lot of foam padding. The shell is quite firm, not foam, and seems to protect very well. The top is reinforced and is stronger than the bottom half, so I would orient any LCD screens face up. Like any case, the weak point is if compressed in the center you can flex in if you squeeze it. But it seems significantly stronger than foam or some cheaper alternatives. It would have been nice if the bottom was reinforced as much as the top, but the bottom is still quite firm, just not as resistant to compression. I just wouldn't this at the bottom of... 5/5 Tiger (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

Great case but beware of SIZE!!!

0 4/5 CC (Montana) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic Portable EVA Hard Drive Case QHDC-101 - Red (Personal Computers) I purchased this case along with a 1TB Seagate Portable Hard Drive. I looked at the dimensions of the hard drive (4.8 x 3.2 x 0.6) and compared to the dimensions of the case (5.3 x 3.5 x 1.5) and felt very comfortable that it would be adequately sized to house the hard drive. I was wrong! While the case is a perfect fit for the length & depth of the hard drive (the 5.3 and 1.5 sides) it falls over 0.5 short on the width. The dimensions given were obviously exterior and not the "usable" space. So beware.Other than that the case is great with a very handy net compartment on one side and has a very hard & sturdy construction. I'm going to keep it and use for my memory media cards.UPDATE: I just went online to buy a new case for the hard drive....and saw exactly why I bought this case....it was the "also sold with this product" noted on the amazon page. Urggg. Even more frustrating that it was grouped with a hard drive that it doesn't even fit. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 18, 2012

"Improved"? The new version is garbage!

It's true, CL has "improved" this product. In the process they ruined it. For one thing, they removed several features, for instance the new version does not have the removable fast file and lacks the slot for a label on the handle. Also, it is about 30% lighter, and obviously "cheaper" in many respects, e.g the sides are now lightweight nylon. I would be surprised if one of these new models holds up for even 30% as long as the old one. And it's UGLY: brown stitching on black faux leather looks awful! There is one actual improvement in the new one - it was easier to open flat on a table. And one possible improvement - the attachment of the handle is apparently different, but you can't really tell if it's any better because it is hidden on the new one.You can't blame Amazon - the new and the old one have the same UPC code (8585405012). But they are different part numbers: old = #60 2233002, new = #63-2400017-A.I am disgusted with Case Logic for... 1/5 Tom S. (Southern California) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Someone from Case Logic PLEASE read my review along with the 2 before me

I will admit that hands down case logic is THE BEST cd wallets you can buy. They are (usually) constructed with great quality and you actually feel that you get your money's worth. Even the protection it provides for the cd's that you put it in it is outstanding. I'm a scratch freak and I've noticed that Case Logic wallets do not put any scratches what-so-ever on your cd's or dvd's. Not even those little really light ones that you only see in bright light. Nothing bad to say about them at all, it was pretty much everything a CD wallet should be, at it's finest. BUT!, new this year is the redesigned version of these wallets and they are TERRIBLE! The previous models were superior to any other cd wallet out there. Now they have BROWN STITCHING put against black koskin leather. The handle looks completely cheap and it comes from inside the wallet. Letting you know that there is no telling what is holding it in place. The mesh screen IN the handle is gone, so no more labels can... 1/5 Jeremy Clark (Carterville, IL USA) - See all my reviews, July 26, 2006

0 5/5 gabe (university of california, berkeley, ca, usa) - See all my reviews This review is from: Case Logic KSW-320 Koskin 336 Capacity CD/DVD Prosleeves Wallet (Black) (Electronics) I just received this case in the mail today. This is the second one I have bought off of amazon (this exact item), but this one was not exactly the case described and pictured above. It had a cardboard sleeve/carton wrapped around it that also described and pictured this item as it appears above. The cardboard wrapper didn't match the item in it.I like the new design better though. It looks nicer, the Koskin material is slightly brown, but just barely (it looks black until you inspect it closely). The Handle is more secure, actually attached inside the material.THE ONLY BAD DIFFERENCE IS THAT THE 16 SLOTS IN THE FRONT OF THE CASE AREN'T REMOVABLE, LIKE THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE. I own the other case (the one described and picture above), and the removable 16 CD folder is pretty handy.Otherwise, I'm happy with the changes and will not return it. In fact, I'm ordering another one!! BUT, AMAZON SHOULD CHANGE THEIR DESCRIPTION. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , February 14, 2006

This briefcase only weighs 21 ounces (1 pound 5 ounces), including the shoulder strap, which is lighter than many laptop bags. The exterior feels like soft neoprene while all interiors are lined with nylon. The main laptop compartment has dimensions of 15.25 inches wide and 11.25 inches deep, and can accomodate a laptop of 15.2"x10.5"x1.7". The Biking Jersey of eDevice Cases

I have purchased several CaseLogic items over the years. In every instance, after a few years, I needed something different long before it showed appreciable signs of wear - the mark of a properly made product. If minimizing the footprint of your current set of must-have electronic devices (smartphone, iPad, laptop and associated cords and power adapters) is the goal, this is the product of choice. There is not room for much else, though, so when you add the included shoulder strap (with its wide rubber pad) to the contents of the case, and perhaps a slim external drive, it will begin to bulge. As another reviewer noted, a pad of writing paper would feel squeezed. My iPhone 4 is in an Otterbox and is able to slide - though snugly - into the middle of the three sub-pockets of the external section. If both a laptop and iPad were present in their designated slots of the main section, you'd probably want the iPhone in the external-most zippered pocket, where the... 4/5 Canthespam (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2012

Attractive, slim and a good value

For some reason, it's been very hard to find a moderately priced, slim, and reasonably attractive case for a 14 inch laptop. The Case Logic AUA-314 in black fits those requirements nicely. The case is very slim and compact. The interior pockets are very basic, but all I really need. This won't carry much besides the computer, but most of the time that's fine.My biggest objection is the strap, it seems cheap looking though I imagine it's fine in terms of strength. It's not as nice as the strap on the other Case Logic cases I've owned. (Compare the strap for the VNA214, below, to see what I mean. The handle on the older model is better, too.)While this case isn't meant to stop bullets, I wish there was a little more padding and reinforcement, for those times when you accidentally bump the computer.I'm not a fan of the vertical zipper on the front pocket for the phone, it makes the pocket of limited use for anything else. Great backpack but with a couple of minor drawbacks

This is a great camera backpack, and for the price, can't really be beat. However, there are a couple of things that I dislike about the bag.1) The padded dividers are quite thick and take up a chunk of space within the backpack.2) The hammock system for the camera is neat but it also results in a lot of wasted space at the top of the backpack on either side of where the DSLR body sits.3) The zipper for the main flap goes down all the way to the bottom but due to the rubberized "bucket" at the bottom, has to stop above the bucket section at the base of the backpack. This is inconvenient because the lower most compartments of the backpack are hard to get at since the flap cannot be pulled apart any more. That space is pretty much dead space because anything that is stored in there will not be easily accessible unless you lay the bag completely flat and then struggle a bit with pulling your lens out of the bottom most compartment.4) The... 4/5 Orion "SM" (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) ********** 10 STARS ON THIS SLRC-206 CASE!!!! GREAT BUY!!!

WOW, is where I will start, this case gets 10 STARS! In the past I reviewed the Case Logic XN SLR-6 med. case and it had MANY flaws. ALL of those flaws have been corrected on this new SLRC-206 case. The area where the camera body goes is now UNIVERSAL! ANY body will now fit this case even with a Canon 300mm L lens attached, hood reversed! My 20D even fits perfect with a battery grip attached, It is totally universal, BEAUTIFUL! There is now padding all around even the flap that goes around the top over the camera body! The padding is very substantial all over this case, even the small pieces that hold your lenses in place are very thickly padded, moveable and and contoured to hold everything secure. Everything inside is moveable with velcro, even the rubber sling piece the lens slips through, completely adjustable for any use, you can even take out everything inside and use it as a regular backpack! I LOVE THIS CASE and I thank case logic for listening to my review and correcting... 5/5 P. Cannon (Big Pine Key, Florida United States) - See all my reviews, October 20, 2009

    Another fantastic product from CaseLogic

This is a very well thought out bag that really stands out from others in its class. For someone like me, who travels with their gear and does a good bit of hiking and camping, a rugged bag is essential. The organizational possibilities are endless with this pack. The interior is composed of numerous foam components (coated in soft felt) equipped with Velcro. It is super easy to rearrange the padding inside to give any lens a snug fit. I threw in my 200mm zoom and 1.4 prime lenses today, quickly readjusted the padding, zipped it up, and I was out the door without a worry. Of course, I still had room for about four other lenses. I also had my 20-year-old Minolta camera in there, and the design of the hammock and the way the padding angled around the camera body gave it a very secure fit. The memory foam designed to sit on top of the camera body is dense, but it is covered in felt and seems safe enough to have pressed against the display screen of a DSLR. In short,... 5/5 Senor Zoidbergo (Washington D.C.) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2009

0 3/5 Rachel Barr (Fort Davis, TX USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic Point and Shoot Camera Case TBC-402 (Electronics) I've purchased this same model twice before for point-and-shoot cameras that I eventually sold or gave away, and they were much better constructed than this last order. One side of the case is a good 3/8 inch shorter than the other side, making it difficult to zip around the corner of my camera. Camera is pretty much the same dimensions as my last one (PowerShot - updated model, and if anything it's actually a bit smaller).I've been a Case Logic fan for years and was really surprised at how poor the construction of this case was. Never thought I'd say that about a Case Logic. Even the fabric is less desirable than the older iterations of this model.I found an old TBC-402 that I thought I had lost or given away and compared the two side-by-side. Nope, it's not my imagination. The new one is just sort of crummy. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 8, 2014

This review is from: Case Logic Point and Shoot Camera Case TBC-402 (Electronics) I bought this b/c another review said that it fit the Sony RX100 perfectly. However, I didn't realize that the RX100M2 is slightly thicker than the first version (RX100). My camera doesn't fit so I had to send it back. It looks like a great case and plenty durable, but don't get it if you have the Sony RX100M2. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , January 4, 2014
