Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

    Dependable, solid, large

This Case-Logic CD carrier is a good, solid storage device. It is pretty standard wallet, with space for 208 CDs or DVDs divided into 26 pages of sleeves (4 CDs each side, front and back), plus space for an additional 16 CDs inside the front cover. Although it is a tight squeeze, it is possible to fit both the CD and the booklet or liner notes into the same sleeve. The pages are held in place in a ring-binder type arrangement, so it is possible to unlock them and take individual pages out of the case, if you want to remove them for travel (or possibly to add more pages for more storage.)The sleeves are well padded, so your discs shouldn't get scratched. The top, bottom, and binding of the case are solid, and leave the contents well protected. I've had my case a few months and haven't had any significant wear or tear- the zipper seems to hold up well, too.Obviously, when full of 200+ discs, the case can get pretty heavy, and isnt going to be something that you want to... 5/5 D. Great solution to CD Storage -- get rid of your jewel cases!

It is wonderful grabbing one of these cases and flipping thru the pages to find my CDs, rather than pawing thru jewel cases, knocking over the stacks of them, and giving up after a half hour of searching. I have 3 CDW-320's, each holding a different genre of music. In a fire, I could grab all three cases and go, where that would've been impossible before. By my calculations, the physical space used by my CD collection has decreased by 40%!The way to do what I did is to get rid of the jewel cases entirely. To do that, do this for each CD you own:1) Each side of each CDW-320 page has four pockets. Put the CD in one of the two top-most Pockets on a page.2) Put the CD's booklet in the pocket underneath its CD.3) Finally, pop open the CD case (it takes just a little force) and pry out the back-of-the-CD card. Straighten out the folds of that card, and slide it in sideways into the bottom pocket, behind the CD's booklet. It will... 5/5 W. L. Fantastic Protective Sleeve For Macbook Pro's & Google Chrome Cr-48

Case Logic, Inc. has been around since 1984, which is probably right about the time I bought my first Case Logic case for my cassette tapes. Over the years, as they added items to their product line, so I added their products to my collection. As a sample, I believe I have owned at one point or another, Case Logic cassette cases, CD & DVD cases, CD player cases, Zip Drive cases, trunk organizers, and more. I'm looking around my home office and I can spot several of their products and I bet you do too. Case Logic's 13.3 Laptop Sleeve (LAPS-113) is one of many sleeves that Case Logic makes and it just might be the perfect protective, no frills sleeve for your 13.3-inch or smaller laptop.PROS:- No nonsense, sleek design- 6mm EVA foam padding- Smooth gliding zipper- Protective lip prevents damage from zipperCONS:- Slight rubbery odorI define my perfect laptop sleeve to be one that has no handles, pockets, zippers, or bulk... 5/5 Ed (San Francisco Bay Area) - See all my reviews, March 1, 2011

    Sleek and secure

I was expecting a mere utilitarian sleeve to hold my 13" Mac Pro laptop. I am delighted that it also provides some aesthetic satisfaction. The color is a solid inky black, with no lighter threads in the design. The Case Logic logo on the front is small, with the yellow-orange square of half-sun that pops out stylishly and yet is unobtrusive. The woven webbing on the sides is a nice nifty touch. The top-loading zipper--which is a primary feature for me in determining quality--is sturdy and smooth, and slides like buttah from one side to the other. It won't scratch your laptop because it has a protective lip. The 6 millimeter foam padding feels substantial and secure, and my laptop slips in easily, like a card in an envelope. It fits snugly but not too tightly, either.External dimensions are 14 x 1.1 x 10" and internal dimensions are 13 x 1.1 x 9.1" The exterior and lining is made of 100% polyester. The attached description card says "25 Years Quality... 5/5 "switterbug" Betsey Van Horn (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews, April 8, 2011

This review is from: Case Logic Display Sleeve LAPS-113, 13.3-Inch, Black (Personal Computers) This case is a sleek, nicely padded, elegant product, but it is not a good fit for the 2012 MacBook Pro with Retina Display. It is at least 1 inch too large in length and width which leaves the notebook sliding around inside the case. Sturdy, Reinforced Top, Nice Strap Inside

Customer Video Review Length:: 6:05 MinsOverall, this is a quality case. Whether it fits your device well is entirely up to whether your device dimensions fit the dimensions of the case well. There is no foam padding inside, but it has a nice one inch wide elastic strap that runs the length that holds the device fairly well. But without foam, it will not have much shock resistance if you want to throw it around. But you do gain a slim case without a lot of foam padding. The shell is quite firm, not foam, and seems to protect very well. The top is reinforced and is stronger than the bottom half, so I would orient any LCD screens face up. Like any case, the weak point is if compressed in the center you can flex in if you squeeze it. But it seems significantly stronger than foam or some cheaper alternatives. It would have been nice if the bottom was reinforced as much as the top, but the bottom is still quite firm, just not as resistant to compression. I just wouldn't this at the bottom of... 5/5 Tiger (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

Great case but beware of SIZE!!!

0 4/5 CC (Montana) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic Portable EVA Hard Drive Case QHDC-101 - Red (Personal Computers) I purchased this case along with a 1TB Seagate Portable Hard Drive. I looked at the dimensions of the hard drive (4.8 x 3.2 x 0.6) and compared to the dimensions of the case (5.3 x 3.5 x 1.5) and felt very comfortable that it would be adequately sized to house the hard drive. I was wrong! While the case is a perfect fit for the length & depth of the hard drive (the 5.3 and 1.5 sides) it falls over 0.5 short on the width. The dimensions given were obviously exterior and not the "usable" space. So beware.Other than that the case is great with a very handy net compartment on one side and has a very hard & sturdy construction. I'm going to keep it and use for my memory media cards.UPDATE: I just went online to buy a new case for the hard drive....and saw exactly why I bought this case....it was the "also sold with this product" noted on the amazon page. Urggg. Even more frustrating that it was grouped with a hard drive that it doesn't even fit. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 18, 2012

The biggest mini backpack--Not too small, Not too big

This is the size I've been looking for. I was in search of a bag that would fit a 13" MacBook Pro, as well as a 13" Dell Latitude. I'm not a big person and I hate big heavy bags. My previous bag was HUGE and was designed for a 15" laptop of yesteryear. The laptop slot barely held my widescreen 13" and yet the bag was enormous. I bought the old bag from LL Bean in 1998, and it held up wonderfully--but it was made for a time when a 15" laptop was bulky and we carried lots of books and folders with us.Best uses:Professional with a 13"-14" laptop (or 15" Macbook) looking for a minimal but still useful backpackPros:Small profile yet IMPRESSIVE capacity for what it is.LightweightHolds TWO laptops and both power supplies (one in the padded compartment and one using a thin sleeve in the spot designed for a binder/book)Laptop section appears to accommodate nearly all 14" laptops easily and possibly a 15" MacBook (probably not most other 15"... 4/5 Shockster (Lexington, KY United States) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) 0 3/5 Max L. (Colorado) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic DLBP-114 14-Inch Laptop /MacBook Air / Pro Retina Display Backpack (Black) (Personal Computers) This is a good choice for a small backpack. If you need to carry much more than the laptop, charger and some small accessories you may find this doesn't have the space to meet you needs. Quality is what I expect for Case Logic, very good for the price. No issues with zippers or seams, even after heavy use. Another nice feature is the textured mesh on the underside of the shoulder strap that helps keep it from slipping off your shoulder. The one and only downside is the lack of padding on the bottom of the pack. Leaving an unprotected edge for the laptop, which I discovered when the pack slipped out of my hand and landed with a thump, resulting in a dent on the corner of my laptop. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 31, 2012

    Great compact tech backpack

I was looking for a backpack to replace a 15-year old Target/Walmart-type backpack from high school. I wanted something that I could take to/from work, was flexible enough in offering a few different types of compartments, and wasn't overly big/bulky/saggy.This is exactly what I wanted. We'll start with the straps. They aren't filled with gel like some packs are, so they aren't the cushiest, but they do at least have a decent amount of stuffing in them, plus they are fairly wide, and get larger as they go up towards your shoulder, so the bag doesn't feel like it's cutting into your shoulders at all. The roll-up velcro piece that holds excess strap after you're done adjusting it to your preference is quite novel, but not something you interact with every time you wear the pack, so it's not a huge deal. The top and the lower front of the pack each have a reasonably-sized grab handle. Good for carrying into your car, or hanging on a coat hook at... 5/5 Matthew Fugel (Atlanta GA) - See all my reviews, March 17, 2012

    Great-Protective-Comfortable(laptop/tablet) Travel Bag

What a great Backpack!Case Logic has so many nice products and this is yet another wonderful item!*I like that this backpack is light and not heavy like others. It is padded very well to protect electronic items(laptop up to 15.6" and tablet up to 10.1").*It is also padded and comfortable on the shoulder straps and back of the bag. It is quite comfortable to wear. It is sewn well and made of sturdy material.*The bag has lots of pockets and I really like the two, larger interior zippered pockets that keep my important items in place and a little more protected. There is one mesh zippered pocket near the laptop slot and another sturdy zippered pocket in the outermost area, near where pens, keys, and other small items go.**There is a spot for a water bottle, a pocket for a music player(with headphone hole), a sun-glass pocket on top, and even a slightly hidden pocket for "secret storage" or a passport pocket.**A... 5/5 LG "*" (CA) - See all my reviews, June 1, 2014

These are my experiences with this laptop backpack:Likes: What I like about the backpack is that it has numerous pockets for the things that you need to carry with you -especially, and most importantly- your laptop.
