Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

    Case Logic

    Dependable, solid, large

This Case-Logic CD carrier is a good, solid storage device. It is pretty standard wallet, with space for 208 CDs or DVDs divided into 26 pages of sleeves (4 CDs each side, front and back), plus space for an additional 16 CDs inside the front cover. Although it is a tight squeeze, it is possible to fit both the CD and the booklet or liner notes into the same sleeve. The pages are held in place in a ring-binder type arrangement, so it is possible to unlock them and take individual pages out of the case, if you want to remove them for travel (or possibly to add more pages for more storage.)The sleeves are well padded, so your discs shouldn't get scratched. The top, bottom, and binding of the case are solid, and leave the contents well protected. I've had my case a few months and haven't had any significant wear or tear- the zipper seems to hold up well, too.Obviously, when full of 200+ discs, the case can get pretty heavy, and isnt going to be something that you want to... 5/5 D. A first rate product

Like the other Case Logic CDW wallets, this one has removalbe pages, holds the discs securely, and has room for rather substantial liner notes. Those that won't fit in the sleeves will fit in the pockets up front.Because of the unique design of the locking system however, inserting papges is not particularly easy -- the rings lock in front of the first page, so to insert a page, you have to pull out all of the pages in front of it. It would have made more sense to have it lock in the back -- that is where you would either want to add pages, or remove the extra ones. All in all, we are pleased ... it is a great way to store our cd's, it gets rid of that major shelving system we bought only for our discs, and, frankly, the discs are more accessible, than in some of those fancy jewell cases. My favorite aspect of the wallets is that we actually listen to our music more -- we were storing our discs in our library -- away from our stereo, so you actually... 4/5 bob - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) the first cd wallet of this magnitude i ever bought- was the fellowes one. (my review is in there somewhere) I have two of these case logic wallets now (i bought one on sale @ amazon and my friend sent me one from my wish list). I'm ordering a THIRD case logic case because they withstood hurricane Rita... well... actually there wasn't much of a hurricane in Houston - BUT i did have to lug all of three of my 320 cd wallets around during the evacuation. The Fellowes is made well- but you can't take pages out and organize them. Case Logic Portable Hard Drive Case does it's job

I bought this case to protect my Western Digital 250 GB portable USB hard drive, as I move the drive around a lot between home and work. I'm using the hard drive to back up my iTunes music collection, so I want to take care of it, hence I purchased this Case Logic case. The case is easy to use. When you open it up, you'll find two compartments (one on each side). One has an elastic strap that snuggly holds your hard drive in position. The other compartment has a mesh flap which acts like a pocket, so you can have a space to put a USB cable and maybe a flash drive or two in a pinch. As the case is small, it isn't really designed such that you can leave the hard drive in the case during operation. There isn't enough room for the connector to fit when it is placed in the drive, without the cable putting undue stress... 4/5 R. Case Logic

    Durable, high quality CD wallet

Let's start with the outside of the wallet. The design is elegant, and minimalistic, with a slight curve down the left front side, also serving as a handgrip, and a line through the middle, along with the Case Logic logo. The zipper has a rubber tab attached to it, and it zips open and closed without any hassles. The entire wallet has a very durable feel to it.Inside, each page lets you store two CDs, or a single CD, plus notes/game manuals. Pages flip easily, and discs seem easily to slide in and out as well, at least compared to the Velocity CD wallets which were recently on sale here at Amazon with rebates.Zipping the wallet up, turning it upside down, and banging on it, one finds that the discs stay in place, and don't slide towards the top, again, unlike the Velocity CD wallets where discs often slides towards the top just while turning pages. All in all, this is a very well thought-out CD wallet, with a nice design, and seemingly durable... 5/5 Phillip Roncoroni "goodcowfilms.com" (Manhattan, New York) - See all my reviews, September 5, 2005

It Will Survive A War...And Then Some (Seriously)

I've been a fan of Case Logic wallets for years; I'm generally a very active person who hauls his disks around for trips both short and long. I've owned some Caselogic wallets for 8+ years without ever having to replace it.Such is the situation for this Case Logic wallet. I've carried it around with me in Iraq for six months now, and it generally lives to its standards. Solid and crush-resistant, very durable, the only problem I've had with it is its tendency for one or two of the plastic disc holders have ripped. But such is the case with such heavy wear/tear. If you're like me, storing both album art and CD in the same sleeve, it's what you need. It also has a side pocket on the inside front cover for me to store back inserts and/or miscellaneous excess DVD/CD material that comes with the packaging.Buy this if you're mobile; buy it if friends tend to step on your case; buy this if through no fault of your own your cases are constantly abused. Great for a travel professional

I am a pilot for a living so I go through security several times a day and need a security friendly laptop case. This one fits the bill. I bought this because I had another Case logic that finally gave up after 5 years of airline travel.Another reviewer mentioned that you should buy the previous model to save a few bucks. When I was doing my shopping the difference was about five dollars, and that one does not have the sleeve for a tablet on the inside. For me this was worth the extra few dollars. This case exhibits Case Logic's usual rugged construction and solid zippers. I like that this model has plenty of other pockets, and space for cords, and even a spot for a small binder or portfolio.Because I go through security so much I'm a big fan of the airport friendly design. This case is pretty much universally accepted by TSA and makes grabbing and going really easy. The mostly black design is a little boring but professional, which is good for my... 4/5 P. Pricey, but worth it!

I bought this bag to use for carrying my electronics back and forth from home to work, as well as the occasional flight. This bag takes care of it all for me. I am able to put my beast of a laptop (17.3" screen at about 8lbs) in the rear compartment, put my iPad 2 (in an otterbox) in the tablet pouch, with out the screen cover :( as well as a planner and other misc papers in the center-front compartment. In the admin pouch I can keep the massive power brick, wireless mouse, thumb drives, keys, and other small miscellaneous items. In the front zipper pouch I am able to hold spare pens, my wallet, 30ft of 550 cord, and other important papers that I need to keep within easy reach.Going through the TSA screeners I had no problems unzipping the middle zipper and running it through the x-ray station without having to empty a thing. It was so much nicer not having to gut my bag to get through the screening stations! With all the gear I put in my bag I am... 5/5 J. Fitzpatrick - See all my reviews, July 5, 2013

This review is from: Case Logic 14-Inch Security Friendly Laptop Case (ZLCS-214) (Personal Computers) Let me start by saying I love the many pockets and the way the zippers are so smooth. My external hard drives fit perfectly in the front organizer pocket along with my phone charger and other electronics. The case opens up smoothly which is good. I travel a lot and I feel these smooth zippers and neat organizer will save me so much time trying to locate the things I need.I just got this case from the mail and the first thing I noticed is the case is smaller than I expected. My Lenovo Z400 barely fits in this case. The sides and bottom seem protected but I'm disappointed by the fact that there is absolutely no padding on the top side of the case. I hope I don't drop this thing on it's head.Overall, the case is a good concept but I wish it were slightly larger with more padding. It seems this case was not built with total protection in mind. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , May 21, 2013

Nice, but be sure this is what you want ...

Please note, there are 4 sizes (10, 10.2, 14, and 16 inches) of the same case type; I am writing a review of the 16-inch case. This is a well-made but relatively inexpensive bag for a laptop PC. It is so light that I can barely feel its weight, but it still has sufficient padding to protect its contents against bumps during everyday use. This is NOT the kind of case with zippers that can be pulled further to the left and right sides when you open the bag. In other words, the opening for you to put in and take out things is very small. Does this matter? Yes, if you have a laptop PC that measures diagonally 15.6 to 16 inches. The fit is snug, and because of the narrow opening, putting in and taking out a computer is not that smooth and easy. Although the zippers are plastic, there is a chance of them scraping against the computer's edges. I would not recommend this case if you have concerns about this aspect. If your computer is a netbook, which is about 10 inches... 3/5 Amazonian Consumer - See all my reviews, March 22, 2010

A Great Hold-All for your Gear

I was offered the opportunity to review this new, Amazon-branded case, and I have to say that my first impression was "Wow". I was very impressed by the non-cheapness of this case, when compared to others in the <$20 range. This case is designed to be the hold-all for whatever you've got. And as you can see from the photos, there's lots of room.If you're only looking for a case for just one tech gadget, this probably isn't for you unless you're bringing a ton of accessories along.I expect you to easily store your GPS, smartphone, and music player, and still have room for all the adaptors, chargers, and cords you'd need.Places to store stuff: - One very large mesh compartment big enough for the GPS and smartphone together (no zipper) - One tiny mesh zipper'd compartment for some very tiny adaptors - One small zipper'd compartment big enough for larger adaptors, memory cards, etc - Two medium compartments each... 5/5 D. CASE LOGIC

Great backpack but with a couple of minor drawbacks

This is a great camera backpack, and for the price, can't really be beat. However, there are a couple of things that I dislike about the bag.1) The padded dividers are quite thick and take up a chunk of space within the backpack.2) The hammock system for the camera is neat but it also results in a lot of wasted space at the top of the backpack on either side of where the DSLR body sits.3) The zipper for the main flap goes down all the way to the bottom but due to the rubberized "bucket" at the bottom, has to stop above the bucket section at the base of the backpack. This is inconvenient because the lower most compartments of the backpack are hard to get at since the flap cannot be pulled apart any more. That space is pretty much dead space because anything that is stored in there will not be easily accessible unless you lay the bag completely flat and then struggle a bit with pulling your lens out of the bottom most compartment.4) The... 4/5 Orion "SM" (USA) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Another fantastic product from CaseLogic

This is a very well thought out bag that really stands out from others in its class. For someone like me, who travels with their gear and does a good bit of hiking and camping, a rugged bag is essential. The organizational possibilities are endless with this pack. The interior is composed of numerous foam components (coated in soft felt) equipped with Velcro. It is super easy to rearrange the padding inside to give any lens a snug fit. I threw in my 200mm zoom and 1.4 prime lenses today, quickly readjusted the padding, zipped it up, and I was out the door without a worry. Of course, I still had room for about four other lenses. I also had my 20-year-old Minolta camera in there, and the design of the hammock and the way the padding angled around the camera body gave it a very secure fit. The memory foam designed to sit on top of the camera body is dense, but it is covered in felt and seems safe enough to have pressed against the display screen of a DSLR. In short,... 5/5 Senor Zoidbergo (Washington D.C.) - See all my reviews, December 20, 2009

********** 10 STARS ON THIS SLRC-206 CASE!!!! GREAT BUY!!!

WOW, is where I will start, this case gets 10 STARS! In the past I reviewed the Case Logic XN SLR-6 med. case and it had MANY flaws. ALL of those flaws have been corrected on this new SLRC-206 case. The area where the camera body goes is now UNIVERSAL! ANY body will now fit this case even with a Canon 300mm L lens attached, hood reversed! My 20D even fits perfect with a battery grip attached, It is totally universal, BEAUTIFUL! There is now padding all around even the flap that goes around the top over the camera body! The padding is very substantial all over this case, even the small pieces that hold your lenses in place are very thickly padded, moveable and and contoured to hold everything secure. Everything inside is moveable with velcro, even the rubber sling piece the lens slips through, completely adjustable for any use, you can even take out everything inside and use it as a regular backpack! I LOVE THIS CASE and I thank case logic for listening to my review and correcting... 5/5 P. Cannon (Big Pine Key, Florida United States) - See all my reviews, October 20, 2009
