Foundations Without Foundationalism, A Case for Second-Order Logic

Creator: Stewart Shapiro | Mathematics - 2000-05-18

Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics.

Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA

About this book
Stewart Shapiro presents a distinctive and persuasive view of the foundations of mathematics, arguing controversially that second-order logic has a central role to play in laying these foundations. To support this contention, he first gives a detailed development of second-order andhigher-order logic, in a way that will be accessible to graduate students. He then demonstrates that second-order notions are prevalent in mathematics as practised, and that higher-order logic is needed to codify many contemporary mathematical concepts. Throughout, he emphasizes philosophical andhistorical issues that the subject raises. Foundations without Foundationalism is a key contribution both to philosophy of mathematics and to mathematical logic. 'In this excellent treatise Shapiro defends the use of second-order languages and logic as framework for mathematics. His coverage of the wide range of logical and philosophical topics required for understanding the controversy over second-order logic is thorough, clear, and persuasive. . . .Shapiro recognizes that it is unlikely that he has had the last word on these controversial philosophical subjects. Nevertheless, his book is certainly an excellent place to start work on them.' Michael D. Resnik, History and Philosophy of Logic

    Dependable, solid, large

This Case-Logic CD carrier is a good, solid storage device. It is pretty standard wallet, with space for 208 CDs or DVDs divided into 26 pages of sleeves (4 CDs each side, front and back), plus space for an additional 16 CDs inside the front cover. Although it is a tight squeeze, it is possible to fit both the CD and the booklet or liner notes into the same sleeve. The pages are held in place in a ring-binder type arrangement, so it is possible to unlock them and take individual pages out of the case, if you want to remove them for travel (or possibly to add more pages for more storage.)The sleeves are well padded, so your discs shouldn't get scratched. The top, bottom, and binding of the case are solid, and leave the contents well protected. I've had my case a few months and haven't had any significant wear or tear- the zipper seems to hold up well, too.Obviously, when full of 200+ discs, the case can get pretty heavy, and isnt going to be something that you want to... 5/5 D. A first rate product

Like the other Case Logic CDW wallets, this one has removalbe pages, holds the discs securely, and has room for rather substantial liner notes. Those that won't fit in the sleeves will fit in the pockets up front.Because of the unique design of the locking system however, inserting papges is not particularly easy -- the rings lock in front of the first page, so to insert a page, you have to pull out all of the pages in front of it. It would have made more sense to have it lock in the back -- that is where you would either want to add pages, or remove the extra ones. All in all, we are pleased ... it is a great way to store our cd's, it gets rid of that major shelving system we bought only for our discs, and, frankly, the discs are more accessible, than in some of those fancy jewell cases. My favorite aspect of the wallets is that we actually listen to our music more -- we were storing our discs in our library -- away from our stereo, so you actually... 4/5 bob - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Sturdy, Reinforced Top, Nice Strap Inside

Customer Video Review Length:: 6:05 MinsOverall, this is a quality case. Whether it fits your device well is entirely up to whether your device dimensions fit the dimensions of the case well. There is no foam padding inside, but it has a nice one inch wide elastic strap that runs the length that holds the device fairly well. But without foam, it will not have much shock resistance if you want to throw it around. But you do gain a slim case without a lot of foam padding. The shell is quite firm, not foam, and seems to protect very well. The top is reinforced and is stronger than the bottom half, so I would orient any LCD screens face up. Like any case, the weak point is if compressed in the center you can flex in if you squeeze it. But it seems significantly stronger than foam or some cheaper alternatives. It would have been nice if the bottom was reinforced as much as the top, but the bottom is still quite firm, just not as resistant to compression. I just wouldn't this at the bottom of... 5/5 Tiger (San Jose, CA) - See all my reviews, November 5, 2010

Great case but beware of SIZE!!!

0 4/5 CC (Montana) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic Portable EVA Hard Drive Case QHDC-101 - Red (Personal Computers) I purchased this case along with a 1TB Seagate Portable Hard Drive. I looked at the dimensions of the hard drive (4.8 x 3.2 x 0.6) and compared to the dimensions of the case (5.3 x 3.5 x 1.5) and felt very comfortable that it would be adequately sized to house the hard drive. I was wrong! While the case is a perfect fit for the length & depth of the hard drive (the 5.3 and 1.5 sides) it falls over 0.5 short on the width. The dimensions given were obviously exterior and not the "usable" space. So beware.Other than that the case is great with a very handy net compartment on one side and has a very hard & sturdy construction. I'm going to keep it and use for my memory media cards.UPDATE: I just went online to buy a new case for the hard drive....and saw exactly why I bought this case....it was the "also sold with this product" noted on the amazon page. Urggg. Even more frustrating that it was grouped with a hard drive that it doesn't even fit. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , July 18, 2012

Pretty good, depending on the need

I like:- general design is clean. Good fit for non fancy business use or just for school.- the internal mash pockets are pretty comfortable - easy access for your stuff- internal iPad/tablet padded pocket can fit a MacBook air 13" snugly.- external laptop compartment is interesting and easy to use- the bag can easily fit 2 laptops- the zipper handles can support a lock- the bag is comfortable- the edges of the straps are folded in a way that don't let them dangle, looks less messy- good size: not too big and bulky and not too small and slim.I don't like:- the bag somehow looks a bit simple or cheap, hard to explain why.- there are no fast access pockets/compartments for stuff like: keys, phone, money, credit card. The external pocket seems to be a better fit for left handed: when I want to reach the pocket, I usually bring it to the front through my right shoulder (since I'm right handed), however the zipper... 4/5 M. A comfortable and slim backpack that would be ideal for the student (or teacher)

This is a very nice-looking, slim and comfortable backpack. I like the sleek black streamlined design, that can pass for almost any use from casual to semi-professional. It works great for carrying my , along with a few books and papers. There's a padded laptop sleeve that keeps the laptop snug directly against the back. Then comes a larger compartment, that has room for things like books and various equipment, with two internal mesh pockets and a padded sleeve that fits an iPad nicely. Then there's a thinner compartment, with room for papers or a folder or a thin book, with pockets for things like pens and pencils, calculators, phones or mp3 players. Finally, there another outer pocket where you could keep a notebook or a dayplanner or the like. This is not a bulky and roomy backpack designed to function as... 4/5 Nate "Gadget Lover" - See all my reviews, May 27, 2012

    Durable, high quality CD wallet

Let's start with the outside of the wallet. The design is elegant, and minimalistic, with a slight curve down the left front side, also serving as a handgrip, and a line through the middle, along with the Case Logic logo. The zipper has a rubber tab attached to it, and it zips open and closed without any hassles. The entire wallet has a very durable feel to it.Inside, each page lets you store two CDs, or a single CD, plus notes/game manuals. Pages flip easily, and discs seem easily to slide in and out as well, at least compared to the Velocity CD wallets which were recently on sale here at Amazon with rebates.Zipping the wallet up, turning it upside down, and banging on it, one finds that the discs stay in place, and don't slide towards the top, again, unlike the Velocity CD wallets where discs often slides towards the top just while turning pages. All in all, this is a very well thought-out CD wallet, with a nice design, and seemingly durable... 5/5 Phillip Roncoroni "goodcowfilms.com" (Manhattan, New York) - See all my reviews, September 5, 2005

I've been a fan of Case Logic wallets for years; I'm generally a very active person who hauls his disks around for trips both short and long. I've owned some Caselogic wallets for 8+ years without ever having to replace it.Such is the situation for this Case Logic wallet. I've carried it around with me in Iraq for six months now, and it generally lives to its standards. Solid and crush-resistant, very durable, the only problem I've had with it is its tendency for one or two of the plastic disc holders have ripped. But such is the case with such heavy wear/tear. If you're like me, storing both album art and CD in the same sleeve, it's what you need. It also has a side pocket on the inside front cover for me to store back inserts and/or miscellaneous excess DVD/CD material that comes with the packaging.Buy this if you're mobile; buy it if friends tend to step on your case; buy this if through no fault of your own your cases are constantly abused. The biggest mini backpack--Not too small, Not too big

This is the size I've been looking for. I was in search of a bag that would fit a 13" MacBook Pro, as well as a 13" Dell Latitude. I'm not a big person and I hate big heavy bags. Nice and small but

0 3/5 Max L. (Colorado) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Case Logic DLBP-114 14-Inch Laptop /MacBook Air / Pro Retina Display Backpack (Black) (Personal Computers) This is a good choice for a small backpack. If you need to carry much more than the laptop, charger and some small accessories you may find this doesn't have the space to meet you needs. Quality is what I expect for Case Logic, very good for the price. No issues with zippers or seams, even after heavy use. Another nice feature is the textured mesh on the underside of the shoulder strap that helps keep it from slipping off your shoulder. The one and only downside is the lack of padding on the bottom of the pack. Leaving an unprotected edge for the laptop, which I discovered when the pack slipped out of my hand and landed with a thump, resulting in a dent on the corner of my laptop. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , March 31, 2012

    Great compact tech backpack

I was looking for a backpack to replace a 15-year old Target/Walmart-type backpack from high school. I wanted something that I could take to/from work, was flexible enough in offering a few different types of compartments, and wasn't overly big/bulky/saggy.This is exactly what I wanted. We'll start with the straps. They aren't filled with gel like some packs are, so they aren't the cushiest, but they do at least have a decent amount of stuffing in them, plus they are fairly wide, and get larger as they go up towards your shoulder, so the bag doesn't feel like it's cutting into your shoulders at all. The roll-up velcro piece that holds excess strap after you're done adjusting it to your preference is quite novel, but not something you interact with every time you wear the pack, so it's not a huge deal. The top and the lower front of the pack each have a reasonably-sized grab handle. Good for carrying into your car, or hanging on a coat hook at... 5/5 Matthew Fugel (Atlanta GA) - See all my reviews, March 17, 2012
