Light Photography Isn't Working?

I own a Cannon Power Shot SX120 (IS) and I've been following the directions on how to do light graffiti, (what I saw online) I tried with a lazer pointer and my flashlight and both didn't work at all. Yes, I'm doing it on a timer and with the ISO set properly. Do I need to use a different camera?

It looks like the longest shutter speed is 15 seconds (probably you'll need to be in manual mode, which your camera has) 15s is plenty long enough for some light writing or simple pictures. I like to use sparklers, but want to use a laser pointer some day. Set your shutter speed to 15s, aperture at f/8 and ISO at 400 for starters and see what that gets you.

I guess you missed the part where you have to set your cameras shutter speed to bulb and hold the shutter open for as long as it takes to do your light graffiti. Unfortunately, your P&S camera does not have a bulb setting. This means that you have to use a dSLR to shoot light graffiti
keerok | May 05, 2012
Uhm... You don't need the timer. You only need to set the shutter speed as long as possible. Why not try Bulb? http://keerok-photography.blogspot.com/2 011/05/how-to-do-light-painting.html

Compare two cannon cameras?

Two cameras for sale at wal-mart. The cannon sx120 and sx210. there is about a fifty dollar difference between the two with the sx120 costing less. Aside from the battery and pixel differences, is the sx210 a better camera? I've done a lot of research on the sx120 and i love the way how it's hd movies look. sx120 can record 720p videos, iv'e seen several on youtube. i haven't been able to find many videos shot with the sx210. the ones that i have found don't seem to be as good as the sx120 Ok, i'm sorry it's he sx130 vs sx210, my mistake. you were correct about the sx120.

Look here to compare the two. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebysi de.asp But for the superior Li-ion battery, ability to shoot HD video, the additional 16:9 image aspect ratio, the slightly faster top shutter speed and more pixels jammed on its sensor, they are similar Note: * the Canon SX120 has no HD video feature. Only the SX210 has that, but not the Full HD feature * If you need to call Canon, you will notice that the phone number, 800.OK-CANON is NOT spelled cannon .... the military weapon. I have no clue why people still spell this cameras name wrong after so many years

Complete Digital Photography

Creator: Ben Long | Photography - 2005

Teaches digital photography techniques and skills, explains the difference between traditional and digital photography, and explores editing and special effects.

Publisher: Charles River Media, Incorporated

About this book
Digital photography has arrived once and for all. No longer do photographers have to be defensive because they prefer digital. Thanks to new technologies, digital cameras at all ends of the price spectrum can rival their film counterparts. If you have shifted from traditional to digital photography, and need to know what's different about shooting digital, this is the book for you. Now in its third edition, this bestseller has been fine-tuned and updated to provide you with the most current information on today's cameras that you'll find anywhere. Whether you're new to photography, or new to digital photography, you'll learn how to take the best possible shots. Even though your camera may pack an image sensor instead of film, taking good pictures still involves understanding apertures, shutter speeds, and metering techniques, as well as a few other issues that film shooters don't face. Fortunately, digital cameras also provide some unique tools to help you get the shot right the first time. Covering everything from the inner workings of your camera to the subtle intricacies of your image editing software, the book is divided into four sections. The first section provides a basic technical foundation that will prepare you for the rest of the book. It details the basics of how digital cameras work and gives you a quick photography primer. The second part explores everything you need to know to make an informed decision about which camera, computer, and software is right for you. In section three, you'll progress to the nitty gritty of shooting, including metering, choosing the right exposure, using histograms, flash photography, and much more. In the final section, you'll learn about digital editing and correction techniques, along with the various methods for outputting your images (print and electronic).

About this book
Jimmy Fallon is very thankful. And in this first book to come from his TV show, he expresses his gratitude for everything from the light bulb he's too lazy to replace to the F12 button on his computer's keyboard. He thanks microbreweries for making his alcoholism seem like a neat hobby. He thanks the name "Lloyd" for having two L's. Otherwise it would just sound like "Loyd." He thanks the slow-moving family walking in front of him on the sidewalk. Without this "barricade of idiots," he might never have been forced to walk in the street and risk getting hit by a car in order to get around them. He's thankful to you, the person reading this right now. It means you're considering buying this book. You should do it. You will be thankful that you did.

Synecdoche, New York, The Shooting Script

Synecdoche [sih-NECK-doh-kee], noun. A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole, as in the screen for movies.

Publisher: Newmarket Pr

About this book
synecdoche [sih-NECK-doh-kee], noun. A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole, as in the screen for movies. From Charlie Kaufman, perhaps the most distinctive screenwriting voice of our generation, comes a visual and philosophic adventure of epic proportions. Much as he did with his groundbreaking scripts for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kaufman twists and subverts the form and language of film as he delves into the mind of a man who, obsessed with his own mortality, sets out to construct a massive artistic enterprise that could give some meaning to his life. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Catherine Keener, Emily Watson, Dianne Wiest, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hope Davis, and Tom Noonan, and directed by Kaufman, Synecdoche, New York is an epic story of grand artistic ambitions and creative madness. This Newmarket Shooting Script® Book includes: Exclusive introduction by Charlie Kaufman Complete Shooting Script Exclusive Q&A Color photo section Complete cast and crew credits

    A Rank Amateur's Review

I can't write an in depth review of this camera because I simply don't have the knowledge of either cameras or photography. But I can tell you what I, as a rank amateur, like about it and why I chose it.I have grandkids. I needed a camera that would allow me to capture decent pictures of them - and in a digital format - so that I can, like all good grandparents, brag about my grandkids via email and attach photos to prove that they are the cutest kids on the face of the earth.I had my "good" camera - an old Pentax K1000 that I've had for about 30 years - and a small, inexpensive digital camera that I got a few years ago and have never been happy with. Not only was the Pentax not digital, it also turns out that the grandkids can move much faster than I can focus. And that camera purchased as my first attempt at digital just wasn't cutting it. It was overly complicated and with it I wasn't getting pictures good enough to share.I gave my needs some... 5/5 Mary Kate (Wisconsin, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Canon PowerShot SX120IS 10MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Images Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD (Electronics) I can't write an in depth review of this camera because I simply don't have the knowledge of either cameras or photography. (Maybe not) The one I've been looking for

I have been debating whether to get a point-and-shoot that is ok, or an SLR that is fantastic. I couldn't justify spending mega$$$ on an SLR because I'm not that sophisticated a photographer. But I have been unhappy with point-and-shoots that are so slow you miss the picture and that have only a "mini-zoom" feature. But the Canon SX120IS solved it all. First, it's a lot less expensive than an SLR. And with the image stabilizer and a really fast shutter response time, I can catch the action before it's over! It takes great close-ups, it has 10X optical zoom, and it has lots of other cool features I can't wait to learn how to use. Plus the LCD screen is large and the controls are easy to use. My only disappointment is that it has no view finder and in some bright light conditions it is hard to see the screen. But overall, I give it thumbs up!OK, now that I've used it a while, I have more comments. First the good: I could get it from Amazon and it takes really... 3/5 D Sing (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Great Camera, though a bit noisy

My needs for a camera are as follows:1) It needs to fit in my pocket2) It needs to turn on quickly3) It needs to shoot "decent enough" photos on auto mode4) It needs to have enough options to tweak lighting settings.5) It should have both good indoor and outdoor performance.6) I'd like something that can do automatic exposure bracketing or otherwise support HDR photography.I've gone through various cameras over the years, and have borrowed some others to mess around with, and until last week was using a Canon A620, which was a surprisingly good camera, capable of taking shots as good as a DSLR, especially when tweaked correctly. It also could do automatic exposure bracketing for HDR photography when using the CHDK firmware for it. Then I accidentally left my A620 on a bench on South Beach when visiting last week, and so I suddenly found myself in the market for a new camera.I was seriously looking into the Fuji 200EXR and the... 5/5 William Kerney (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews, September 15, 2009

    A Fantastic Compact Zoom Choice

I'll start by saying that I'm a Canon fan. Three out of four of my current digital cameras, including both my DSLR's, are Canon. When I was looking to upgrade my compact zoom, this unit caught my eye for both its price point and its feature set. For a sub-$200 compact zoom, this camera definitely leads the pack.Pros:* 12 megapixel image capture* Very good image quality* Full 720P HD video capture* Excellent low light performance for its class* Excellent image stabilization capability* Full manual control, including Av, Tv and full manual modes* Great zoom range, especially at the wide end* Excellent, fast and intuitive performance* Reasonable battery performance with rechargables (a MUST!)* Works with convenient AA batteries* Excellent flash for its class* Excellent color fidelity with no detectable image artifacts* Fast continuous shooting for a compact camera* Perfect size for a... 4/5 J. Amazing Straight From The Box

I first heard about the SX130is on August 19th- the same day I had decided that my final purchase decision would be the SX120is. After reading a few reviews, it had me convinced that this would be worth waiting for. I received my SX130is late this morning- and have to say, right from the box it was just amazing. Every time in the past when purchasing a new camera, it takes some adjusting and "breaking in" before fully great-quality pictures come, but with this one, literally from the first shot it has been wonderful. The HD video also records wonderfuly, and the sound is great as well- even with using all of the 48x digital zoom! The one "downside" to the video mode is that the image doesn't auto-focus as you zoom in, at times you have to re-focus using the shutter just as you normally would when taking a picture, but I personally didn't find that too annoying once I figured it out. The miniature and fisheye modes are a blast to use, and the smart-shutter mode (takes the photo when a... 5/5 jtm - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) Superb mini all-rounder

I bought this camera mainly because it was reviewed as having good pic and video quality, it has HD video, and it takes AA batteries. So far it's been superb all round. The AA batteries bit is a really big deal for me. I so nearly bit the bullet and got a camera that uses a proprietary battery pack -- as, tragically, they almost all do now -- only to discover, when trying to get 2 spare packs, that they're basically unobtainable! This makes such a camera useless for me, as on a long trip (e.g. weekend hike), once the battery is dead, you're stuffed until you find a 110v outlet to charge from.I understand that AAs are more bulky for a given charge, and presumably that's why the SX130 only takes two. I'd personally take a larger handgrip to make room for two more batteries, but the bottom line is, it doesn't really matter. Just take along spares, and change them out as needed. Important Info On Fix For Battery Problem

I have given 3 stars, but don't know yet if that is too high or too low. I have just erased a review very critical of the batteries because of new information that indicates it may have been unfair. The cause, I have learned, for at least part of the problem was the camera, not the quality of the batteries. If I find that the cause was entirely the camera, then I will so indicate in this review and give the batteries 5 stars. My problem was that after a period of time using the camera that the batteries seemed to lose much of their charge. Then not even a fully re-charged battery would work. The charger by means of the green light was saying the batteries were charged. However, the camera would start then shut off immediately saying on the screen that the batteries needed to be charged.Yesterday I contacted Canon service and received a quick response. The fix, they said, was to remove the battery from the camera, CLOSE the battery door, then press and hold... 3/5 Kenneth Depree (Sosua, Dominican Republic) - See all my reviews, August 31, 2013

Stick with the overpriced OEM Canon batteries

These things are garbage. I recently bought the SX260HS along with some accessories and these spare batteries for a trip to Italy. I know the battery life on the 260 is not that spectacular so I thought having a couple of spares along would be a good deal, and at 1/3rd the price of a single official Canon battery for two of these, it seemed like a good idea. Not really a surprise (I'll tell you why in a moment) my Canon batt with the camera worked very well within the specified amount of pictures with modest LCD brightness and frequent use of many features. So a few hours later I switch to my back up battery (these ones) and find that one already registers as low and the other says it is full, goes for about an hour and suddenly is totally dead to the point you get the usual message on the LCD to replace the battery pack. The reason I am not surprised is my last Canon I went through the same motions. Great zoom, a big screen and intuitive controls in a relatively small size camera. Takes great pictures too.

This camera marries some of the best features of the Canon S series like zoom and manual flash with the convenience of the A series. This camera is an upgrade of the SX100 and feels much more sleeker than the previous model. Here is my take on the camera:Strengths:- 9MP CCD sensor with DigicIII processor, the CCD sensor is 1/2.3 inch which is bigger than the most SD series cameras resulting in better pictures- Controls are intuitive and a separate replay start button on the back gives you the flexibility to switch on the camera for playback without extending the lens- Feels good in the hands, battery compartment gives the camera a better grip, DSLR like black color- Huge 3" LCD scratch resistant screen makes composing shots easy- Great 10X optical zoom and 40X digital zoom- Flash can be flipped up or down as needed, this camera also offers 3 manual flash settings which really helps with portraits- Sharp pictures -... 4/5 AmazonDiva "Keep Calm and Carry On." Great zoom, Image Stabil., a little slow

I searched for along time for this kind of camera. (in the $200 range) I was drawn by the 10x zoom and Optical Image Stabilization(IS). (both work great and are very nice to have!) After using it for a few weeks, I have had mixed results. Before you read on, understand that I also shoot with a canon xti, often with a $300 50mm lens on it, so I think my standards might be a little higher than the average user. With that said, here is what I think:When you shoot in auto mode, the ISO it chooses (ISO 200) will not be as clear as the camera is capable of. Thus I find you have to use a Program (P) mode and set it to ISO 80 to get better reduced-noise pictures. Otherwise pictures can be grainy. The pictures are poor at ISO higher than 200.Focusing is a bit slow in low light, and unless you can balance the camera on something steady, and your subject is not moving, you will need to use the flash. As I have read it on reviews on its predecessor Canon sx100, the recycle... 3/5 Mr. T (Southern Cal, USA) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) 3 G: Great zoom, Great picture quality and Great image stabilization

Was searching for a camera with an extended zoom and the resolution in the range of 8-10 MP. Caught hold of Canon SX 100 IS, but it vanished from the market before I could purchase it. Wanted a medium size camera so could not settle for Nikon P80/Canon S5 IS, because of its large size. Ordered Canon SX110 on the launch date itself with apprehensions about its features..but believe me, I am not dissapointed AT ALL.Great manual controls for Aperture and Shutter speed make it a camera for Pros, while the Auto mode is wonderful for learning photographers. The zoom is great and the image stabilisation that the camera offers at the maximum zoom level (Even at 10x optical and 4x digital i.e 40x combined zoom) is awesome. The photos in low light during my recent trip to a hill station were good in the Night mode with lots of saturation of natural colours.Face detection is also a good feature with the camera able to detect faces very very easily (I don't know how does it work, but... 4/5 Mayank Agnihotri (India) - See all my reviews, September 22, 2008

    BRILLIANT POINT and SHOOT

I needed a point and shoot since that is all I know how to do. But this camera is so much more than a point and shoot! I had no idea of its capabilities until after I ordered it. While I was waiting for it to come I decided to watch Youtube videos to see what I was getting.I learned so much from this guy! He explains, and demonstrates, how excellent the pictures are on point and shoot, and shows that the zoom is brilliant! But he also shows you that this is the only point and shoot which you can grow with IF you want to. In other words, if you want to do more than point and shoot with this camera it offers options for you to choose your "aperture, depth of field and lighting." I haven't done any of that, but it is all there on the camera IF you want to learn. I took a photo shooting directly into the sun, looking across the bay, and it came out beautifully! The camera does all the adjusting for lighting, even when pointing into the sun. Shots I took of the Olympic mountain range... 5/5 Andrew P. Simmons - See all my reviews, April 27, 2013
