Light Photography Isn't Working?

I own a Cannon Power Shot SX120 (IS) and I've been following the directions on how to do light graffiti, (what I saw online) I tried with a lazer pointer and my flashlight and both didn't work at all. Yes, I'm doing it on a timer and with the ISO set properly. Do I need to use a different camera?

It looks like the longest shutter speed is 15 seconds (probably you'll need to be in manual mode, which your camera has) 15s is plenty long enough for some light writing or simple pictures. I like to use sparklers, but want to use a laser pointer some day. Set your shutter speed to 15s, aperture at f/8 and ISO at 400 for starters and see what that gets you.

I guess you missed the part where you have to set your cameras shutter speed to bulb and hold the shutter open for as long as it takes to do your light graffiti. Unfortunately, your P&S camera does not have a bulb setting. This means that you have to use a dSLR to shoot light graffiti
keerok | May 05, 2012
Uhm... You don't need the timer. You only need to set the shutter speed as long as possible. Why not try Bulb? http://keerok-photography.blogspot.com/2 011/05/how-to-do-light-painting.html

Compare two cannon cameras?

Two cameras for sale at wal-mart. The cannon sx120 and sx210. there is about a fifty dollar difference between the two with the sx120 costing less. Aside from the battery and pixel differences, is the sx210 a better camera? I've done a lot of research on the sx120 and i love the way how it's hd movies look. sx120 can record 720p videos, iv'e seen several on youtube. i haven't been able to find many videos shot with the sx210. the ones that i have found don't seem to be as good as the sx120 Ok, i'm sorry it's he sx130 vs sx210, my mistake. you were correct about the sx120.

Look here to compare the two. http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebysi de.asp But for the superior Li-ion battery, ability to shoot HD video, the additional 16:9 image aspect ratio, the slightly faster top shutter speed and more pixels jammed on its sensor, they are similar Note: * the Canon SX120 has no HD video feature. Only the SX210 has that, but not the Full HD feature * If you need to call Canon, you will notice that the phone number, 800.OK-CANON is NOT spelled cannon .... the military weapon. I have no clue why people still spell this cameras name wrong after so many years

Complete Digital Photography

Creator: Ben Long | Photography - 2005

Teaches digital photography techniques and skills, explains the difference between traditional and digital photography, and explores editing and special effects.

Publisher: Charles River Media, Incorporated

About this book
Digital photography has arrived once and for all. No longer do photographers have to be defensive because they prefer digital. Thanks to new technologies, digital cameras at all ends of the price spectrum can rival their film counterparts. If you have shifted from traditional to digital photography, and need to know what's different about shooting digital, this is the book for you. Now in its third edition, this bestseller has been fine-tuned and updated to provide you with the most current information on today's cameras that you'll find anywhere. Whether you're new to photography, or new to digital photography, you'll learn how to take the best possible shots. Even though your camera may pack an image sensor instead of film, taking good pictures still involves understanding apertures, shutter speeds, and metering techniques, as well as a few other issues that film shooters don't face. Fortunately, digital cameras also provide some unique tools to help you get the shot right the first time. Covering everything from the inner workings of your camera to the subtle intricacies of your image editing software, the book is divided into four sections. The first section provides a basic technical foundation that will prepare you for the rest of the book. It details the basics of how digital cameras work and gives you a quick photography primer. The second part explores everything you need to know to make an informed decision about which camera, computer, and software is right for you. In section three, you'll progress to the nitty gritty of shooting, including metering, choosing the right exposure, using histograms, flash photography, and much more. In the final section, you'll learn about digital editing and correction techniques, along with the various methods for outputting your images (print and electronic).

About this book
Jimmy Fallon is very thankful. And in this first book to come from his TV show, he expresses his gratitude for everything from the light bulb he's too lazy to replace to the F12 button on his computer's keyboard. He thanks microbreweries for making his alcoholism seem like a neat hobby. He thanks the name "Lloyd" for having two L's. Otherwise it would just sound like "Loyd." He thanks the slow-moving family walking in front of him on the sidewalk. Without this "barricade of idiots," he might never have been forced to walk in the street and risk getting hit by a car in order to get around them. He's thankful to you, the person reading this right now. It means you're considering buying this book. You should do it. You will be thankful that you did.

Synecdoche, New York, The Shooting Script

Synecdoche [sih-NECK-doh-kee], noun. A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole, as in the screen for movies.

Publisher: Newmarket Pr

About this book
synecdoche [sih-NECK-doh-kee], noun. A figure of speech in which a part is used for the whole, as in the screen for movies. From Charlie Kaufman, perhaps the most distinctive screenwriting voice of our generation, comes a visual and philosophic adventure of epic proportions. Much as he did with his groundbreaking scripts for Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Kaufman twists and subverts the form and language of film as he delves into the mind of a man who, obsessed with his own mortality, sets out to construct a massive artistic enterprise that could give some meaning to his life. Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Catherine Keener, Emily Watson, Dianne Wiest, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Hope Davis, and Tom Noonan, and directed by Kaufman, Synecdoche, New York is an epic story of grand artistic ambitions and creative madness. This Newmarket Shooting Script® Book includes: Exclusive introduction by Charlie Kaufman Complete Shooting Script Exclusive Q&A Color photo section Complete cast and crew credits

    A Rank Amateur's Review

I can't write an in depth review of this camera because I simply don't have the knowledge of either cameras or photography. But I can tell you what I, as a rank amateur, like about it and why I chose it.I have grandkids. I needed a camera that would allow me to capture decent pictures of them - and in a digital format - so that I can, like all good grandparents, brag about my grandkids via email and attach photos to prove that they are the cutest kids on the face of the earth.I had my "good" camera - an old Pentax K1000 that I've had for about 30 years - and a small, inexpensive digital camera that I got a few years ago and have never been happy with. Not only was the Pentax not digital, it also turns out that the grandkids can move much faster than I can focus. And that camera purchased as my first attempt at digital just wasn't cutting it. It was overly complicated and with it I wasn't getting pictures good enough to share.I gave my needs some... 5/5 Mary Kate (Wisconsin, USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Canon PowerShot SX120IS 10MP Digital Camera with 10x Optical Images Stabilized Zoom and 3-inch LCD (Electronics) I can't write an in depth review of this camera because I simply don't have the knowledge of either cameras or photography. Great Camera, though a bit noisy

My needs for a camera are as follows:1) It needs to fit in my pocket2) It needs to turn on quickly3) It needs to shoot "decent enough" photos on auto mode4) It needs to have enough options to tweak lighting settings.5) It should have both good indoor and outdoor performance.6) I'd like something that can do automatic exposure bracketing or otherwise support HDR photography.I've gone through various cameras over the years, and have borrowed some others to mess around with, and until last week was using a Canon A620, which was a surprisingly good camera, capable of taking shots as good as a DSLR, especially when tweaked correctly. It also could do automatic exposure bracketing for HDR photography when using the CHDK firmware for it. Then I accidentally left my A620 on a bench on South Beach when visiting last week, and so I suddenly found myself in the market for a new camera.I was seriously looking into the Fuji 200EXR and the... 5/5 William Kerney (San Diego, CA) - See all my reviews, September 15, 2009

(Maybe not) The one I've been looking for

I have been debating whether to get a point-and-shoot that is ok, or an SLR that is fantastic. I couldn't justify spending mega$$$ on an SLR because I'm not that sophisticated a photographer. But I have been unhappy with point-and-shoots that are so slow you miss the picture and that have only a "mini-zoom" feature. But the Canon SX120IS solved it all. First, it's a lot less expensive than an SLR. And with the image stabilizer and a really fast shutter response time, I can catch the action before it's over! It takes great close-ups, it has 10X optical zoom, and it has lots of other cool features I can't wait to learn how to use. Plus the LCD screen is large and the controls are easy to use. My only disappointment is that it has no view finder and in some bright light conditions it is hard to see the screen. But overall, I give it thumbs up!OK, now that I've used it a while, I have more comments. First the good: I could get it from Amazon and it takes really... 3/5 D Sing (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) SX20 IS Great Hybrid Camera For Video And Stills

I bought the SX20 because I had good luck with the SX10

I shoot all kinds of stuff with all kinds of cameras. I am a working photographer who shoots for advertising and corporate client as well as to make images for my own books about photography. Over the last two years I've been using small cameras like the Canon G10 and the SX10 for more and more of my work. In the studio, shooting set up shots or small products these cameras shine by dint of their easy to use Live View and increased depth of field. When I bought the SX 10 it was for the long range of the zoom lens which meant I could shoot anything from a construction site to tight shots of the cabins at the top of the construction cranes. I've done some portraits with studio lights and an SX10 and they were also very usable. I wish the SX 10 and SX 20 had raw file capability but they don't. That just means I have to be a bit more careful about WB and exposure. I've used the SX10 at outdoor swim meets and found that the lens performs better than expected right out to the... 5/5 Kirk Tuck "Kirk Tuck" (Austin, Texas) - See all my reviews This review is from: Canon PowerShot SX20IS 12.1MP Digital Camera with 20x Wide Angle Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-Inch Articulating LCD (Camera) I shoot all kinds of stuff with all kinds of cameras. I Like this Camera

Years ago I carried and VHS video camera with separate recorder as well as an SLR. Even after video went to the 8mm tape and camera were much smaller I gave up the video and concentrated on stills. I went through the 640 x 480 digital cameras and found the images horrible, digital would never replace film. I've since packed away my film cameras and concentrated on DSLRs. I carry a pocket digital camera for convenince but turn to the DSLR when I plan on taking photos.Recently I was viewing photos taken by a friend on his SX10 IS. I was intrigued by the features, the quality of the photos, and the video capability. When I went to Amazon.com to check on the price of this camera I saw the SX20 IS slated for release. Important Info On Fix For Battery Problem

I have given 3 stars, but don't know yet if that is too high or too low. I have just erased a review very critical of the batteries because of new information that indicates it may have been unfair. The cause, I have learned, for at least part of the problem was the camera, not the quality of the batteries. If I find that the cause was entirely the camera, then I will so indicate in this review and give the batteries 5 stars. My problem was that after a period of time using the camera that the batteries seemed to lose much of their charge. Then not even a fully re-charged battery would work. The charger by means of the green light was saying the batteries were charged. However, the camera would start then shut off immediately saying on the screen that the batteries needed to be charged.Yesterday I contacted Canon service and received a quick response. The fix, they said, was to remove the battery from the camera, CLOSE the battery door, then press and hold... 3/5 Kenneth Depree (Sosua, Dominican Republic) - See all my reviews, August 31, 2013

Stick with the overpriced OEM Canon batteries

These things are garbage. I recently bought the SX260HS along with some accessories and these spare batteries for a trip to Italy. I know the battery life on the 260 is not that spectacular so I thought having a couple of spares along would be a good deal, and at 1/3rd the price of a single official Canon battery for two of these, it seemed like a good idea. Not really a surprise (I'll tell you why in a moment) my Canon batt with the camera worked very well within the specified amount of pictures with modest LCD brightness and frequent use of many features. So a few hours later I switch to my back up battery (these ones) and find that one already registers as low and the other says it is full, goes for about an hour and suddenly is totally dead to the point you get the usual message on the LCD to replace the battery pack. The reason I am not surprised is my last Canon I went through the same motions. Purchased a third party spare, thing never held a charge and... 1/5 PositiveRate (Los Angeles) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) Large capacity batteries

0 5/5 Tull1 "Tull1" (Southern California) - See all my reviews Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: BM Premium Pack Of 2 NB6L, NB-6L, NB-6LH Replacement Batteries For Canon PowerShot S120, SX170 IS, SX260 HS, SX280 HS, SX500 IS, SX510 HS, SX600 HS, SX700 HS, ELPH 500 HS, D10, D20, D30 Digital Camera (Accessory) These batteries have 20%+ more capacity than the OEM Canon batteries. And yes, when shooting video I have gotten about 20-30% more time to shoot before battery is exhausted. If only shooting hi-res pictures, 300+ is easy to achieve before battery needs to be re-charged. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 28, 2013

We traveled to different locations in mexico, camera in hand at them all, and when the battery low light would come on, I would replace it with one of these batteries. They seemed to work just as good as the canon battery, flash seemed to recycle quickly, and the life seemed good, we never were able to run 2 batteries down in one day, so I cant say how long they actually lasted. Upon returning home we took 1800 photos in mexico, many with the flash, and no problems with the batteries. We would charge them up each night. For the money, I dont think you can beat them. I would recommend them. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , September 19, 2012

    Canon SX260 Batteries and charger

I shot over 1100 pictures and took 10 or so videos during two weeks and often had to change out batteries during the day. I was impressed with the battery life I got from these aftermarket units, probably as good if not better than the Canon battery that came with the camera. With two spares I always had battery available so I didn't have to miss any photo ops.I've only had these batteries for six weeks but they have both been charged 10-12 times and have been very dependable. Recommended. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , October 30, 2012

Very handy. LCD screen protectors are worthless. Impossible to apply without getting air bubbles under them. The unit is small and light for easy traveling. Charger works great. 0 Help other customers find the most helpful reviews  Was this review helpful to you? , June 27, 2012
